  3. Metadata managementin the old days ! (1 of 2) Producer Side • Organizations needs to keep a minimum set of information about their products. (Example: precision, validity date, projection, sources used, etc.) • They also needs an easy access to this information for the planning of the different works or treatment to be done. (Example: planimetric correction, update, integration, edge match etc.) • Need for a management system for the metadata • For the producer, metadata was a very important piece of their planning and production task • Metadata are kept in a “in house” format Canada’s Natural Resources – Now and for the Future

(2 of 2) Client Side • For the user, metadata was an accessory file ! • How this information (metadata) is structured or formatted ? • In house format • Dublin Core • FGDC • Etc. • The group that made the largest usage of the metadata was the producer that created them ! North American Profile (NAP)& Data Producers (1 of 2) New Context ! • For the producer: many new products are available and there is a need to standardized the way the metadata are kept and managed internally • For the client: The metadata are no longer just an accessory file but turn to be the major way to discover data and get access to it Canada’s Natural Resources – Now and for the Future

  6. North American Profile (NAP)& Data Producers (2 of 2) ISO-19115 North American Profile ! • For the producer: one standardized way to record metadata, independently of the product type. A common set of tools and standards available to manipulate the metadata (example: OGC-CSW) • For the client: A unique format describing their data and also a convergent way to discover data across WEB Portals Canada’s Natural Resources – Now and for the Future

Physical implementationof the NAP at CTI (1 of 2) • Things to do to realize a physical implementation of the NAP • Transpose the conceptual model of the ISO-19115 in a physical model • Implement the physical model in a database • Validate that all the components cardinality are respected according to the standard • Test with real metadata (example: NTDB) • Create tools that load and extract metadata (WEB Services) Canada’s Natural Resources – Now and for the Future

Tools • Conversion: • Style sheets (XSLT) • Java programs from Legacy “SIB” system to NAP XML files • Presentation: • Styles sheets (XSLT) – ESRI, GEONETWORK, etc. • Many visualization and edition tools – Example: ISO Metadata Editor (IME) • Information Management System – ESRI, GEONETWORK • Etc.
