  1. WHAT ARE ANXIETY DISORDERS? Anxiety disorders are a category of mental health disorders that seriously impact everyday life. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health conditions in the United States, with more than 40 million sufferers. Anxiety disorders often begin during the teen years and can worsen over time. Oftentimes, depression and anxiety are comorbid conditions that can exist at the same time. Anxiety may also be accompanied by other mental health disorders, such as OCD, ADHD, or PTSD. SPECIFIC TYPES OF ANXIETY DISORDERS INCLUDE: Social anxiety Generalized anxiety disorder Panic disorder Agoraphobia Specific phobias Health anxiety Anxiety is a highly treatable condition. If you are suffering from excessive worrying, stress, or fear, you don’t have to live this way forever: recovery is possible and we are here to help. WHAT ARE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY DISORDER? Often, the symptoms of anxiety develop slowly, making it difficult to pinpoint when it started. Common signs and symptoms of anxiety may include: Constant worry around everyday events and interactions Always seeing the worst-case scenario Difficulty making decisions Concentration problems

  2. Difficulty controlling feelings of nervousness or fear Trouble relaxing Physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle aches, or stomach problems Feeling “on edge” Excess stress surrounding school, health, work, finances, relationships, or household chores Irritability and restlessness Excessive tiredness Sleep difficulties Anxiety symptoms tend to worsen during periods of high stress and may come and go at varying points of life. However, regardless of the combination of symptoms a person with anxiety may experience, the result significantly impacts their everyday life, experiences, and relationships with friends and family. HOW IS AN ANXIETY DISORDER TREATED? The goal of treatment for anxiety is to reduce feelings of worry and fear while developing healthy coping strategies that allow you to respond to stressors realistically. Medication helps many patients who suffer from anxiety, but people with anxiety may require treatment options other than or along with medications to regain control of overanxious emotions. TMS treatment can help with alleviating certain types of anxiety including OCD.  Counseling can help you process underlying experiences that contribute to anxiety while helping you learn to calm your mind. When addressing anxiety, the team at Ohio Psychiatric Services creates customized treatment plans and may suggest a combined approach to meet the needs of each patient.
