  2. Direct Instruction Cooperative Groups Discovery Inquiry Approaches for teaching Social Studies that I would use:

  3. Direct Instruction A teacher-led instructional procedure that provides students with specific information and direction on a task.

  4. Cooperative Groups Students work together to successfully complete a task.

  5. Discovery The teacher provides the students with a problem and they “make sense” of the problem and come to a conclusion.

  6. Inquiry • Students use strategies to test their hypothesis. • The student is responsible for most of the learning.

  7. Reasons for using direct instruction, discovery, cooperative groups, and inquiry together. • Simply using one method of instruction will not allow all students to excel to their potential. • All students do not learn in the same way. • Using a variety of approaches allows for a variety of learning abilities. • Different concepts require different approaches to teaching.

  8. Materials used to teach social studies: • Newspaper articles • Interviews with others • Regalia • Museums • Artifacts • Field Trips

  9. Newspapers • Students can learn about current events. • Students can be constructors of their own knowledge. • Students can be taught how to use the newspaper as a tool for retrieving information.

  10. Interviews with others. • Students can work in groups to learn from each other. About their past experiences, culture, and beliefs. • Students can learn the importance of diversity and how they influence the people the meet.

  11. For example: By using a legacy trunk from the Lincoln Museum student can see and touch artifacts that center around Abe Lincoln’s life. Thus, sparking their interests by giving them an idea of what they will be learning about in that lesson. Realia using objects around you to motivate students at the beginning of a lesson

  12. Artifactsa cultural specimen or souvenir • By seeing and holding artifacts students can have a tangible idea of how something was used. • Students can then learn from inquiry as to how it was made and for what purpose it was made.

  13. Field Trips • Since students are constructors of their own knowledge they can learn from educational field trips. • By visiting them the facts they have learned or will learn begin to become real to them.

  14. Lincolns Birth Place Students can learn from an educational video about his childhood and the way people lived during 1742. Kentucky Museum Felt House Students can learn from the tour guide that will tell them about how people lived and students can have a first hand experience of a real home from the early 1800’s. Oh the places to go!

  15. Places Con’t Lincoln Museum Tells of Abe Lincoln’s life from birth to his assignation.

  16. Places Con’t Knob Creek Having visited Knob Creek, I can tell students how change over time has affected the home at Knob Creek. Students can see how the home has changed and how beams were placed to support the weak structure.

  17. How instruction impacted learning. • Lesson attached • I used direct instruction and cooperative learning. Students were able to hear my instruction and then work together to follow out their task. Students learned how oral history changes over time.
