Overview • Striving for an active conference • Want Audience participation • Presenters should give biographical information • Michael Wiltberger – NCAR/HAO • Magnetospheric physics background • Developed CISM-DX Visualization package for space physics • Private Pilot License • Wide range of interest so avoid jargon • Call out when you here a term or acronym you don’t understand • Schedule is a guide not ridged metric • Speakers will not be penalized for discussion that occurs

  3. What 3D Viz tools are being used? • Developed CISM-DX • Based upon OpenDX visualization engine • Adds tools for common space physics manipulations • OpenDX support is diminishing • Open Source Alternatives • Paraview and Visit • Strong support DOE • Commercial Packages • Tecplot

  4. What 2D Viz Tools are being used? • Broad utilization of IDL and Matlab • Expensive to license • Add on packages for space physics – SolarSoft • Growing utilization of SciPy and pylab • SpacePy is being developed to provide access to common tools like superposed epoch analysis and field line tracing

  5. Challenges and Opportunities • Large data sets from models are going to require a shift away from the compute, move, analyze paradigm • Flip the 80/20 problem to allow students to begin working real problems sooner rather than later • Others?
