Music • R&B, Hip Hop, Electronica and Pop music dominated the music scene • Rock, Alternative, Hardcore, Metalcore and Pop Punk were quite popular • Emo was the only emergence of the 2000s • Internet allowed unsigned artists to distribute music freely • Pop was the most commercial genre by the end of the decade • Eminem, Jay-Z, *NSYNC, The Black Eyed Peas, Nickelback, Slipknot, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold, Suicide Silence, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Green Day, Blink-182, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, Rihanna, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, Kelly Clarkson and Justin Bieber rose to fame in the 2000s

TV Top 10 Shows During the 2000s The Wire Doctor Who 30 Rock The Office (U.S. and U.K. Versions) South Park Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sex and the City Dexter Malcolm in the Middle Lost • TV mainly consisted of drama and comedy series for Generation Y youth. • Crime, adventure and fantasy were also quite popular.

Fashion (Early 2000s) • Heavy Metal: leather and denim jackets, hi-top converse, black skinny jeans, and camouflage. • Pop Punk: baggy jeans, wristbands, trucker hats, Aviators, and full-zip hoodies. • Hip Hop: hoodies and sweatpants, matching denim jeans and jacket, track suits, bandanas, and Phat Farm shoes. • Daisy Dukes, Ugg boots, and cowboy boots were popular amongst girls.

Fashion (Mid 2000s) • Gel bracelets • “Smart casual” style: dress trousers, long-sleeve dress shirt, crewneck tees, dressy slip-ons, dress socks, and a belt. • Boot-cut and flare jeans • Skinny low-rise jeans, hip-hugging denim mini-skirts • Geek Chic: designer glasses, Ray Bans, and rimless glasses. • Polo tops (especially pink) and striped dress shirts • Nike Airs and Converse • Dickie pants • Handkerchiefs/bandanas around the neck • Japanese kimonos • Military attire and camouflage print • Shoes/boots with long, pointed toes (men and women) • Capri pants: just below the knee, usually worn with sandals in summer and boots in winter • Bright coloured Crocs

Fashion (Late 2000s) • Leggings: usually worn with tunic tops or baby-doll dresses • Ballet flats and round-toed shoes • Grunge: flannel shirts, Vans, beanies, work boots, and ripped jeans • Flannel/lumberjack tops worn with skinny jeans • Denim waistcoat • Sperry Top-Sider deck shoes • Gladiator sandals and long dresses (floral patterns) • New Era Baseball caps (Snapbacks)

Major Health Issues • 2001: Foot-and-mouth disease in the UK, killing over 10 million sheep and cattle. • 2002/2003: Severe acute respiratory syndrome in Hong Kong, killing 775 people worldwide. • 2003: Mad cow disease. • 2005: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in England & Wales, killing 1,629 people. • 2007: Bird flue • 2009: Swine flu, considered a natural disaster, killing at least 18,000 people. • Obesity is one of the most serious health issues on the 21st century.

  12. Politics • October 26th, 2001: U.S. President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act. • June 1-4th, 2002: The Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. • February 15th, 2003: Guinness Book of World Records largest anti-war rally in human history occurred. • 2009: Barack Obama became the first US biracial President.

Science • Astrophysicists confirmed the age of the universe to be 13.7 billion years old. • 2004: The Mars Exploration Rover Mission reached Mars. • The Human Genome Project was completed. • The Genographic Project traced every living human back to one male ancestor. • July 29th, 2005: Eris was discovered, a Kuiper Belt object larger than Pluto. • August, 2006: Pluto was demoted to a “dwarf planet”. • 2009: Scientists discovered water ice on the moon. • AFIS and CODIS became the main forensic tools for fingerprint and genetic code investigation.

  14. Technology • Music downloading, data compression, and iPods. • Google is now defined as a verb. • Flash technology (eg. YouTube) • USB flash drives replaced discs. • Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2003. • Blogs, portals, and wikis became popular broadcasting tools. • Wireless networks in homes and schools. • Video game industry profits exceeded the movie industry’s. • Social networking sites (eg. Myspace, Facebook, Twitter) • Smartboards in schools
