  1. LHC injection and dump re-commissioning 2012 W. Bartmann, M. Barnes, C. Bracco, E. Carlier, L. Drosdal, B. Goddard, M. Meddahi, V. Kain, J. Uythoven LBOC Meeting, 21-Feb-2012

  2. MPS task list for checkout and beam com. https://espace.cern.ch/LHC-Machine-Protection/default.aspx LHC inj/dump recommissioning

  3. Normal commissioning with beam • Injection system: • MKI softstart tests • Synchronisation SPS extraction kicker and MKI • Synchronisation of MKI with the AGK interlock • Injection set up • TL steering and save reference (TI 8 realigned) • TCDI- setup and validation (phase space coverage) • TDI/TCLI – angular setup and validation (TDI grazing with MKI knob) • Injection cleaning • Beam dump system: • TCSG/TCDQ set-up and validation (asynch dump tests) • 14/15 MKD test • MKD/B and MSD energy tracking (4 TeV) • Synchronisation of abort gap and RF • Interlock checks: RF, BPMS (SW/HW), TCSG/TCDQ position (SW/HW), MSD FMCM • XPOC checks • BI acquisition and logging (BTVs blocked, might be used for special cases) • Test of procedures when BD system does not trigger via BIS • Abort gap monitor/cleaning LHC inj/dump recommissioning

  4. Additional tests for 2012 start-up (I) • TSU • Need 4 h with BIS loops closed and no beam • Few hours with beam in circulate and dump to check if synchronisation OK • TCDQ • TCDQ for B2 has been realigned and recalibrated • New interlock for β* function to be checked or decided to have it maskable and check at a later point? (need β* published for tests) • Abort gap window reduced by 50 ns – to be checked with AGK and SIS updated, can be done in frame of normal checks • Set-up and calibration of Diamond BLMs at SPS extr and LHC inj (together with BI) • Asynchronous dump follow up checks (check situation before) • Extraction channel aperture (fill machine with pilots in 2 us spacing and dump) LHC inj/dump recommissioning

  5. Additional tests for 2012 start-up (II) • TDI/TCLIA • Aperture scan with circulating beam with open TDI jaws • Check if we find same grazing asymmetry in P2 • Measure with Diamond BLMs if losses from circulating or injected beam • Angular alignment of TCLIA.P2? • Seperated beam process for injection protection collimators • TL stability checks with beam on downstream TED (Indiv, EPC to be informed) LHC inj/dump recommissioning

  6. Summary • 2011 we had about 15 min of machine check-out... ... and as a consequence a lot of access requests during slow intensity ramp up • A serious time period is required to test machine protection critical hardware! (BIS loops closed, no beam) • Checkout time needed for: • injection: 1 shift • dump: 4 shifts + 0.5 shifts for TSU • TL: 2 shifts (with beam permit and beam on downstream TED) • Beam commissioning time needed for: • injection: 4 shifts+ 0.5 shifts for TDI/TCLIA • dump: 4 shifts + 0.5 shifts for TSU • Some tasks possible in parallel with other tests LHC inj/dump recommissioning
