  1. LHC sector tests:plans for transfer lines, injection and dump W. Bartmann, M. Barnes, C. Bracco, E. Carlier, L. Drosdal, B. Goddard, V. Kain, M. Meddahi, J. Uythoven Sector Test Meeting, 8-May-2014

  2. Outline • Scope • Preparations without beam • Preparations with beam (SPS extraction, TL) • Preparations with BIS loop closed • Sector test measurements

  3. Scope of BT tests • Re-alignment of relevant parts of the machines (SPS, upstream parts of transfer lines,…) • Modifications to many systems (MKI coatings and TMR, MKD generators, etc) • Magnet settings as from last run not anymore applicable • Can use pilot for the sector test • Won’t be able to fully resemble the final trajectory • Can measure SPS extraction window, but not optimum settings for kicker and bumpers, should do with INDIV • Doesn’t make sense to set up collimators • But test functionality of all equipment and software • Can scan kicker waveforms, test TL stability, synchronisations…

  4. Preparation of sector test without beam I • MKI: • Open valves, conditioning to 55 kV, softstart • Check BETSsim input, SMP energy transmitted • Check MKI waveform logging in OASIS, IQC • Installation and commissioning of MKIs: • IP2 • Installation: wk 21; Bake-out interconnects: wk 22 – 26; Controls commissioning: wk 27 + 28; HV tests etc.: wk 29 + 30 • Tests from CCC: wk 31 - 43 • Sector test IP2: wk 44 – no problem • IP8 • Installation: wk 35 – (no access to install before); Bake-out interconnects: wk  36 – 40; Controls: wk 41 + 42; HV tests etc.: wk 43 + 44 • Tests from CCC: wk 45 – 46 • Sector test IP8: wk 47 MKI8 schedule is tight!

  5. Preparation of sector test without beam II • Magnet systems: • Heat run • Pulsing full line • Switch powering • BI systems: • Movements, acquisition, logging, fixed displays • Screens, BPM, BCT, BLM • SPS extraction region (new monitors), TL and LHC injection/extraction region • Optics • Check settings for SPS extraction, TL and LHC injection/extraction systems • Beam position on injection/dump region screens • TCDI and MKI validation knobs, 14/15 MKD extraction knob • Aperture bumps at MSI, TCDIM, MKI, Q5, D2, TCDQ • Screens matching application

  6. Preparation of sector test without beam III • Protection devices TCDI, TDI, TCLI, TCDQ, TCSP • Movement, function/range • Interlocking • Downstream TED master BIC, injection permit TT40 • Inhibit of MKE in case of MKI erratics • Radiation monitoring • Radmons, Ramses in injection/extraction region, logging • Quality checks: IQC, IPOC • Data reception and logging • Element strengths and limits (thresholds to be updated later) • Element updates, new BLMs in injection regions • New BETS interlock on MSI, TDI • To be discussed in detail • Maskable BIS input • Access to UA while MSI powered to check HW limits?

  7. Preparation of sector test without beam IV • Beam dump • Arming sequence with global BIS • LBDS settings and MCS (changes of generators) • BETSsim (Q4, MSD input) • XPOC • Waveforms, VAC, BTVDD, BPMD  need beam dumped event • BLMs – new BLMs and filters • BETS interlock TCDQ

  8. Preparation of sector test with BIS loop closed • New TSU link to BIS • Prepare inject&dump • Is time foreseen before the sector test with BIS loop closed?

  9. Preparation of sector test with beam • SPS extraction to upstream TED • Setup extraction bump without extensive aperture scan • Steer through extraction channel • Check beam on screens • Kicker (MKE) timing on OASIS  need BCT+MKE • Can the TL be tested until the downstream TED before the sector test?

  10. Sector test measurements I • SPS extraction • MKE waveform scan • Rough aperture check if not yet done • Establish downstream TL trajectory • Screens matching • Check BPM/corrector polarities (and optics) with kick response • Measure TL dispersion • Set TCDI • Check automatic setup application • Trajectory stability

  11. Sector test measurements II • Injection • Threading through injection region onto closed TDI • Set TDI, TCLI • Aperture in injection region • Orthogonal steering • MKI waveform scan (change of screen conductors, TMR aging) • MKI synchronisation • AGK synchronisation • IQC injection oscillation interlock

  12. Sector test measurements III • Beam dump • Synchronisation • Rough check of extraction channel aperture • BTVD/BTVDD image • Test 14/15 MKD knob • MKB waveform – check with ~5 pilots • MKD waveform – never tested, procedure to be set up

  13. Summary • 3-4 blocks of tests • Preparation checks • Preparation with beam until upstream TED – also downstream TED possble? • Preparation with BIS loop closed – will there be time scheduled before the sector test? • Sector test measurements • Detailed procedures on new items/tests to be established • BETS for TDI, MSI, TCDQ • MKD waveform
