Associate Instructor Legislation • AB 852 Fong • Establish re-employment rights for adjunct faculty, base on specific criteria • AB 965 Dickinson • Full-time faculty hiring: Would require community college districts that have less than 75% of their hours of credit instruction taught by full-time instructors to apply a portion of their funds allocated to apportionment growth according to specific formulas.

Legislation contd. • SB 114 Yee • Would require community college districts to determine the compensation of part-time faculty on comparable salary steps as full-time faculty with similar academic preparation and years of experience. The bill would require part-time faculty to be paid in a manner that mirrors the same relationship to the placement of full-time faculty on the schedule.

Active members of the Union Bargaining Unit. • All with previous, long part-time tenures • Sat down and examined methods for demonstrating what they all believed. • They “valued” part-timers. • They “valued” professionalism. • They wanted to do what was right.

San Diego Community College District A Supportive Work Environment • Workplace Matters • Workspace • New buildings & renovations. • Adjunct faculty work areas in the formulation of space allocation plans. • Such work areas shall include at a minimum: • work station or table, chair, visitor’s chair, access to a phone and computer with internet connectivity, and access to a printer • CitySite located in the LRC. • Evening Hrs: Senate arranged access to a centrally located office for duplicating, printing, etc.

Mutual Agreement! • Bumping Rights over less senior faculty • FTEF driven; most senior adjunct with < 54% FTEF has priority for their list • Workload reduction requires 2 consecutive semester with negative evaluations. • Break in service, declining offer with & without VP approval

Email complications

Where’s your Backbone? • Definitions of backbone (Webster’s online dictionary): • Something similar to the spinal column: something that is similar in shape or position to a spinal column. • Fortitude: strength of character and determination • Central supporting part: the part of an organization or system that is its strongest unifying factor and main support • Backbone. A Divisive Analogy? • So, what’s the backbone of your campus?
