Education about Native Americans from the beginnings to 476 • Today we are going to discuss: • What were schools for? • What was worth learning? • Who were the learners? • What was the role of the teachers? • Key people and dates • How does this relate to the education we have today? What’s your opinion on the educational experience that the Native Americans had in this timespan?

  6. What was the role of the teachers? • To inform the students/prepare the young for the future. • Taught by using example and admonition • Admonition: counsel, advice, or caution. A gentle reproof. (“dictionary.com,” 2010)

  7. Key Dates/People • 1AD to the 4th century BC • The last century BC marked the rapid change of the ethnic situation in Europe. The wide expansion of Celtic tribes which made scared all ancient European civilization…(“Indo-Chronology,” 2012). • Lead to a change in schooling in 500 BCE …Europeans and the Natives didn’t have the same type of education.

How does this relate to education today? • Humanistic Curriculum : (Buber, M., 1958), to humanistic educators, the curriculum of any school is found not so much in subject matter, but rather in the environment in which the subject matter is taught. • Where do you think the Native Americans were taught? • What were you taught in the classroom when you were still in grade school?

  9. Education has changed drastically from the beginnings to today. From informal to formal education to the change in core subjects. Everything is in the past has been worth learning, but with the development in history there has also been a development in the educational system.
