  2. What is Culture?? • Culture is the TOTAL way of life shared by members of a society. • What do you think culture includes? • 2 Categories of Culture • Material • Non-Material

  3. Material Culture • Physical Objects that a society produces • Examples: Tools, streets, sculptures, toys, Jewelry, weapons, • Dependent on non-material culture for meaning.

  4. Non-Material Culture • Non-tangible values (It’s there, but you can’t touch it.) • Examples: language, values, rules, knowledge

  5. SF,CT, and SI on Culture • SF • Culture is a given. • How does culture shape us? • Concentrates on language, values, norms, etc. • How does culture shape our behavior?

  6. SF,CT,SI on Culture • CT • Culture is a social product. • Why do particular aspects of culture develop? • What determines the culture? • SI • How is culture learned? • How is culture communicated to newcomers? • Notice the emphasis on interaction

Knowledge and tools people use for practical purposes Exs: knowledge of computer languages or the ability to access the internet are skills related to the computer Anything that stands for anything else and has a shared meaning attached to it. Exs: events, language, images As long as people recognize that they mean something Technology Symbols

  8. Culture Shock • When people are thrown into a new and unfamiliar culture • Leaving everything behind and find their new way in a foreign country • Can be difficult for some…

  9. Group Work • In groups of 3, come up with 5 material and 5 non material examples for our culture in America. (You can not use what has been already given!) • Give me an example of how non-material culture influenced material culture • Ex: Peace sign is a symbol of peace. It has been marketed to become a material culture.
