  1. Periodic table Answers Activity 6-F Pages 219, 220 et 221

  2. Part 1 • Beryllium Be Z = 4 Boron B Z = 5 Carbon C Z = 6 nitrogen N Z = 7 Oxygen O Z = 8 Fluorine F Z = 9 Neon Ne Z = 10

  3. Part 1- Analyze • Silicon Si. Because Si is under C. • Phosphorus P. Because P is after Si. • Sodium Na. It is in row 3 under Be.

  4. Part - 2 • The elements of group 2 are : - Beryllium Be • Magnesium Mg • Calcium Ca • Strontium Sr • Baryum Ba Note : For names, see page 562

  5. Part - 2 • The symbols : - Beryllium Be Z = 4 • Magnesium Mg Z = 12 • Calcium Ca Z = 20 • Strontium Sr Z = 38 • Barium Ba Z = 56 • The atomic number of Barium is the biggest. It is in the bottom of group 2. • In a group, the atomic number increases from top to bottom.

  6. Part - 2 • Barium. Its atom contains more protons and neutrons. • In a group, the atomic mass increases from top to bottom. 4. Barium. Its mass increases with respect to its volume. http://www.chemicool.com/

  7. Part – 2 Analyze • Elements of the same group: • Boron B Aluminum Al Gallium Ga Indium In Thallium Tl • Hydrogen H Lithium Li Sodium Na Potassium K Rubidium Rb Cesium Cs

  8. Part – 2 Analyze • Carbon C silicon Si Germanium Ge Tin Sn (Stannum) Lead Pb • Copper Cu, Silver Ag et Gold Au (aurum) Yes, they are in the same group, Group 11 (from the left to the right). Yes, because they are in the same column and they are the coinage metals (to make coins). 3. Platinum Pt is in group 10 (from the left to the right). Gold Au is in group 11. No, because they are precious metal.

  9. Part - 3 • Elements of periods 2 and 3 Li Be B C N O F Ne Na Mg Al Si P S Cl Ar • None of them appears in periods 2 and 3. The only liquid elements are: • Bromine Br, in period 4 • Mercury Hg (hydrargyrum), in period 6

  10. Part - 3 • The gases : • Chlorine Cl is underneath Fluorine F. No, in period 4, 5… • Argon Ar is underneath Neon Ne. yes, inperiod 4, 5 et 6

  11. Part – 3 Analyze • The state of a substance (solid, liquid or gas) is a physical property. The Periodic Table is based on the chemical properties. • If one element in a group is a gas, the other elements of this group should notbe all gases. • a) The group number of halogens is 17. b) Mendeleev had found taht the chemical properties of Tellurium are different fromthe chemical properties of Iodine. Mendeleev put Iodine with the halogens because it has the same chemical properties of them.

  12. Groups names • Group 1 Alkali Metals • Group 2 Alkali Earth Metals • Group 13 Earth Metals • Group 14 Dracogens • Group 15 Pnictogens • Group 16 Chalcogens • Group 17 Halogens • Group 18 Noble gases
