Birth • Born and raised in a small village in the Nether Lands. • He was bon March 30, 1853 in Groot Zundert. • He was born exactly one year after his parents’ first son, also named Vincent.
Childhood, Family Oldest of 6 children. His father and grandfather were both protestant clergyman. Three of his uncles were art dealers.
Education He was sent to boarding school, he found it a sad, lonely time. He was not a good pupil . He was intelligent but not academically.
Career • He decided to pursue his art and drew miners and their families. • In 1881 his need to paint and draw was beginning to emerge. • He painted his room at Arles.
Important facts At age 16 he was forced to leave school and get a job because of his families financial problems He cut off his ear after his argument with Gauguin He went to Asylum
Works/ Inventions He created a painting called Starry Night while he was living at the Asylum. He made 38 self portraits. “Portrait of Dr. Gachet” sold for $82.5 million.
Why remembered today He created more then 2,100 works. Several paintings are the most expensive in the world. Considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt
Death • Died on July 29, 1890. • He was 37 years old when he died. • He died in his brothers arms.
