  1. Solar Power

  2. What is great about solar energy? • Solar is a perpetual resource – it will never run out as long as the sun exists • Once installed – solar power is free • Clean – no emissions, no pollution, no greenhouse gases

  3. How it works: Concentrating Solar Power

  4. Different Styles of CSP

  5. How it works: Photovoltaic Panels

  6. CSP vs PV CSP PV Less Costly (cost has dropped dramatically in the last 5-10 years) Produces electricity directly – no generator More costly to store – but most of the time the panels provide energy for the building they are attached to • More costly • Used to power a generator – which allows for back-up of natural gas or other fuel to power generator if needed • Less costly to store the power (although that still doesn’t make up for the cost difference)

  7. The downside to Solar Electricity - • Panels are expensive • Installation can be expensive • Works better in areas with more sun • Efficiency of Panels is limited (currently)

  8. Solar Power to Make Heat and Hot Water

  9. How does solar power give us heat? • Solar energy comes to us as light. • Light can pass through class or clear plastic. It is then absorbed and converted to heat energy. • The heat waves are unable to pass back through the glass/plastic • The heat becomes trapped and the temperature increases
