  3. Chiles High School - 2012-13 Something for everyone - academics, vocational and technical programs, fine arts, athletics, activity clubs, service clubs and more. Orientation – Friday before school starts. Homeroom – Held daily first week of school to review aspects of high school. Lockers – available for students, assigned first week of school in homeroom. Tools available – Planner, online grade system, teacher websites (optional) Lunch – one lunch time, many menu options, Jrs and Srs may go off campus with grades and parent approval. Parking lot – very busy at the beginning and end of school. Bell Schedule 7:30 - 8:20 First Period 8:25 - 9:20 Second Period 9:25 - 10:15 Third Period 10:20- 11:10 Fourth Period  11:10 - 11:55 Lunch 12:00 - 12:50 Fifth Period 12:55 - 1:50 Sixth Period

  4. Articulation Process Guidance Department will meet with students at most feeder middle schools. Distribute Course Request Forms. Private school students and homeschoolers need to complete registration process.Registrar:Mrs.Tucker tuckerje@leonschools.net Encourage balance of challenging academics, courses of interest and extra Curricular involvement. Students should get involved on our campus! High school transcript is cumulative. Students will have an official transcript with unweighted and weighted GPA after the completion of one semester of a high school coursework. Unweighted GPA is based on all courses awarded the standard grading of: A = 4.0 C = 2.0 B = 3.0 D = 1.0 Weighted GPAis based on: Honors and honors gifted courses are awarded an extra .5 for a semester grade of a C or better. A = 4.5 Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses are awarded an extra 1.0 for a semester grade of C or higher. A = 5.0

Graduation Requirements • A four-year, minimum of 24-credits standard program, or • A three-year, 18 credit standard college preparatory program, or • A three-year, 18 credit career preparatory program Standard 24 Credit Graduation Requirements • English – 4 credits • Math – 4 credits (to include Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II) • Science – 3 credits to include Biology • Social Studies – 3 credits ( World History, United States History, Economics and United States Government) • Health Opportunities in Physical Education (HOPE)– 1 credit • Fine Art or DOE Approved Practical Art – 1 credit • Electives – as needed for a total of 24 credits (8 credits) • Earn a 2.0 cumulative unweighted GPA • Pass FCAT Reading 2.0 and End Of Course Exams (EOC) Algebra, Geometry and Biology. • Complete at least one course for graduation via online learning.

Three Strands for 9thGrade Students 9th grade students will typically enroll in four required courses: • English I (general, honors, honors/gifted) • Math • Science • Health Opportunities in Physical Education (HOPE) The traditional track allows students to take World History in 10th grade. The AP Accel program allows for acceleration in the social studies area. Students who participate in AP Accel enroll in World History Honors a year early to allow them the opportunity to begin taking Advanced Placement coursework in 10th grade. The AP Accel Plusprogram allows for acceleration in the social studies. Students who participate in AP Accel Plus being taking Advanced Placement coursework in 9th grade. Those students enroll in Advanced Placement World History or Advanced Placement Human Geography.

  7. Registration and Dates to Remember • Pre-registration information is available on our website under “Prospective Students”. • Guidance counselors from Chiles visit the middle schools. • Dates to remember • March 6 – Curriculum Fair 6:00 – 7:30pm – Chiles Gym • April 10 - Gifted Parent Meeting 6:00 • Mid March – Students return completed registration forms to their middle school. • May – Course verification forms mailed home. • August – Freshmen Orientation at Chiles HS on the Friday prior to start of school.

  8. Florida Bright Futures Scholarships • Academic Scholars Award-Pro-rated per hour tuition coverage at a Florida post secondary institution. Requirements: 3.5 weighted* GPA (16 required academic credits), 1290 SAT or 29 ACT and 100 hours of community service. Forms and Guidelines available on Chiles Guidance website – Information link • Florida Medallion Scholars Award- Pro-rated per hour tuition coverage at a Florida post secondary institution. Requirements: 3.0 weighted* GPA (16 required academic credits) and 1170 SAT or 26 ACT and 75 hours of community service. Forms and Guidelines available on Chiles Guidance website – Information link 16 required academic credits include: 4 English 4 Math (Algebra I level and higher) 3 Science 3 Social Science 2 Foreign Language (in the same language) • The SAT and ACT writing subtests will not be used for determining Bright Futures eligibility.   • Statewide Scholarship Weighting awards .25 per semester for honors, AP and DE courses with a “C” or higher. Advanced foreign language is not honors for BF.

  9. Gold Seal Vocational Scholarship • Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award- Pro-rated per hour tuition coverage at a Florida post secondary institution. Requirements: 3.0 weighted GPA (16 required credits for graduation), 3.5 GPA in a 3 credit vocational program, 30 hours of community service, (Forms and Guidelines available on Chiles Guidance website – Information link) and a passing score on a college placement test (SAT 440 verbal & math, ACT 18 Reading, 17 English, 19 Math or CPT 83 Reading & Sentence Skills, 72 Algebra) TV Productions I TV Productions II TV Productions III Culinary Arts I DCT I Culinary Arts II DCT II Culinary Arts III DCT III Engineering Technology I BST I Engineering Technology II Web Design I Engineering Technology III Web Design II Communication Technology I Criminal Justice I Communication Technology II Criminal Justice II Communication Technology III Criminal Justice III *** Satisfactory completion of a three credit sequential vocational program may award TCC credit toward an A.S. degree. Dual Enrollment • Juniors who wish to take college coursework in their Senior year may sign up for the Dual Enrollment Program • Students may gain as many as 18 hours of college credit in the senior year • Requirements: • 3.0 unweighted GPA AND (one of the following) • SAT 440+ Verbal 550+ Math • ACT 17+ English 21+ Math 18+ Reading • CPT 83+ English 88+ Math 83+ Reading • The CPT is given on campus, free of charge for all Juniors. • Chiles offers Math, English, & Social Studies • For more information e-mail Mrs. Phelan

Accessing the AP Application • Students who plan to take an AP course, must complete an Advanced Placement application. • Go to the Chiles web page (www.chiles.leon.k12.fl.us) • Click on “Departments” • Click on “AP Courses” • Click on “AP ACCEL” • Click on “Application 2012 – 2013” • Print and complete the application and turn it in with your course request form to your middle school guidance office
