  3. Pan-Pacific Theory • People came by boat • 1st theory: followed the NE Asia coastline to Alaska • 2nd theory: Island hopping across the Pacific

  4. Ancient-Middle Age America • Populations grew after the migration • Four Peoples rose as dominant in S.A. • Taino (Caribbean) • Aztecs (Modern-day Mexico) • Incas (Modern-day Peru) • Mayans (Tip of Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador)

  7. Taino People • Inhabitants of the Bahamas, Greater and Lesser Antilles • Thought to be related to peoples in South America • Divided territory into chiefdoms • Eventually died out due to small pox, slavery by the Spanish, and intermarriage

  8. Aztecs • Central Mexico Area, capital: Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City) • Formed an Alliance, The Triple Alliance, to form the Aztec Empire • Comprised of city-states ruled by a king

  9. Interesting Aztec Mythology • Originally wanderers • Huitzilopochtli, the sun god, would give them a sign • An eagle eating a snake on a cactus • Saw the sign, and settled down • Thought to be the site of their capital

  11. Incas • Largest Pre-Columbus American Empire • “Capital” in Modern-day Peru—Cusco • Used assimilation and conquest to expand their empire

  12. Inca Life • No Written language, communicated with pottery • No laws, higher classes punished lower classes • Four provinces of the empire under a central government-federal system

  23. Vengeance • Cortez managed to regroup • Allied with the Tlaxcala (another tribe) • Sieged Tenochtitlan • Built Mexico City in its place • Small Pox killed off whoever Cortez didn’t • Cortez called back to Spain, discovered California, then died a bitter old man
