This project aims to propose and validate a distributed interoperable architectural model for Earth Observation data, enabling harmonized access and collaboration across various disciplines. It also focuses on supporting specific thematic areas like weather, water, and ecosystems, enhancing data sharing, and contributing to the GEOSS initiative. Additionally, the project will enrich the GEOPortal with services using semantics and ontologies for enhanced data discovery and registry population. The high-level approach includes defining use cases, implementing SBA applications, and testing for successful deployment.

Proposal Objectives Joost van Bemmelen, ESA joost.van.bemmelen@esa.int ENV2011.4.1.3-1 proposal meeting, Geneva, Sep. 24, 2010
Proposed Project Objectives • Propose and validate a European distributed interoperable architectural model federating EO (including Earth Science) data holdings, including specific communities’ infrastructures for more advanced data access, processing and usage functionalities • Allow easy and harmonized access to heterogeneous data so enabling multiple disciplines and multiple data centers products/knowledge sharing and collaboration • Contribute to the GCI interoperability, standardisation and operability via developments and evolution • Develop and support multidisciplinary services for data dissemination, access, use (and processing) for the selected SBAs, contributing to the development of assessment tools and monitoring methods for sustainable development • Establish, harmonise and promote data sharing and usage procedures consistent with the GEOSS Data Sharing Implementation Guidelines, and contribute to the development of the GEOSS Data Core ENV2011.4.1.3-1 proposal meeting, Geneva, Sep. 24, 2010
Specific thematic of the project to support users of the SBAs • Weather SBA - Providing harmonized and fast data access for meteorological hazards/extreme events, e.g., floods, including pre-processing services aimed at making the data of immediate use; • Water SBA – Deploying an e-infrastructure giving access to in-situ and satellite data as needed by hydrological application and Run-off process; • Ecosystem SBA – Supporting and enhancing the access to in-situ and satellite observation as well as the access to computing resources needed for executing oceanographic models; ENV2011.4.1.3-1 proposal meeting, Geneva, Sep. 24, 2010
Objectives ++ • In addition the project aims to facilitating and promoting data and knowledge sharing among different SBAs by providing tools and interfaces for homogenous access to heterogeneous data and products. E.g., Weather SBA to benefit from using data and results from run-off processes and GOOS models; vice versa Water and Weather SBA accessing same data. • In addition the project will enhance the GEOPortal with SBAs oriented services also using semantics, ontologies, and thesaurus to allow for discovery of useful data for specific topics and will contribute to further populate the GEOSS registry with new components, related, but not limited, to the interests of the selected SBAs.
