  1. Church TheologyWhat is Truth? Bristol Bible Chapel Feb. 3, 2008

  2. Last Time • “The True Church” -- Ecclesiology • Matthew 16:18 • Jesus promises that He will build His church • What or Who is this true church? • “The true church, composed of the whole number of regenerate persons from Pentecost to the [Rapture] (1 Cor.15:52), united together and to Christ by the baptism of the Holy Spirit (1Cor.12:12-13), is the body of Christ of which He is the Head (Eph.1:22-23). As such, it is a holy temple for the habitation of God through the Spirit (Eph.2:21-22); is ‘one flesh’ with Christ (Eph.5:30-31); and espoused to Him as a chaste virgin to one husband (2 Cor.11:2-4).” C.I.Scofield, Systematic Theology

  3. Last Time What does the Church do? • We have an obligation to the absent Lord Jesus Live our lives in a right relationship (salvation and godliness) to Jesus, and patiently WAIT for His return • We have an obligation to our fellow church members WORK out our salvation as we serve the Body of Christ • We have an obligation to the lost world around us WATCH for opportunities to share the love of Jesus to the lost and dying world

  4. Last Time • 1 Timothy 2:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. (KJV) Pillar – a support or column Ground – to prop or to make stable; to settle firmly [foundation] LET’s PRAY

  5. The TRUTH • A Few Good Men (1992) • Lt. Kaffee (Tom Cruise) JAG • Col. Jessup (Jack Nicholson) • I want the Truth – Son, you can’t handle the truth. • What is the Truth? • Jesus - I am the way, the truth (John 14:6) • The Word - Thy word is truth (John 17:17) As Church members, our mission is to be actively involved in supporting the truth of Jesus Christ as He is revealed through the Word of God.

  6. The TRUTH behind our Salvation • Major Text – Romans 8:26-33a • God Elected (chose) us for salvation • Eph. 1:4 and 1 Pt. 1:2 According as he hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world… - And - Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father…

  7. A Warning As we talk about subjects like foreknowledge and predestination, these are very profound, very deep truths and as we try to understand them with our limited minds, as we try to grasp the purpose of God, we have to remember that we're embarking upon a journey into a realm of truth for which we are not fully equipped.  In other words, we have to recognize at the beginning that we're going to get in pretty deep and we're going to get in way over our head, in fact we're going to be beyond our capability to comprehend.  We're going to journey into the divine infinity of divine purpose and no higher pursuit than that exists and we have limits as to how far we can really go. Quote from John MacArthur

  8. Elect / Chosen • Eklegomai • verb • to pick or choose out for one's self • Tense – Aorist (simple past tense) • Voice – Middle (subject is the doer for his own benefit) • Mood – Indicative (a fact) • It is God’s sovereign right to select whom He wants • Divine election of Israel, the Church & of Angels

  9. The TRUTH behind our Salvation • The PURPOSE for & PROGRESS of Salvation • Romans 8:29-30 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. (KJV)

  10. The Purpose • To be conformed into the image of Jesus • Symmorphos • adjective • having the same form as another, similar, conformed to, fashioned like unto • Eikōn • noun • a likeness, i.e. (literally) statue, profile, or (figuratively) representation, resemblance

  11. The Purpose Why does He want to make us like Christ?  So that there will be many brethren among whom Christ will be the firstborn.  Firstborn is the word prototokos and it means the premiere one, not in chronology, it means the firstborn was always the most notable child, the one who inherited everything, the one who had the rights and privileges and honors, it's the position of preeminence.  You see, God had a plan and the plan was that there would gather around Christ a redeemed humanity made in His image who would view Him as preeminent and thus forever and ever and ever they would praise and honor and glorify His name...and that's why we were saved. Quote from John MacArthur
