  2. Time and Event • Friday afternoon in late September • Davita’s mother and she traveled with her father to a pier in Manhattan, and her father had to take the ship to Spain. Characters in this Chapter Davita, Michael, Chandals, JakobDaw, Aunt Sarah, David Dinn, Ruthie

  3. Plot Summary • Chandals told Davita about her father’s away and Chandals said, “We have to work hard, Llana. That way most of the time we can forget the lonliness. I learned that from my mother”. (pg104) • When Davita asked about JakobDaw, her mother became silence and refused to answer my questions. • Davita’s mother said that people are good by nature, and “this goodness is now blocked by social, political, and religious barriers”. (pg107)

Plot summary • After Davita’s father’s departure, her mother began to travel to Manhattan in the evening. • Sometimes Davita would go downstairs and play with Ruthie in her apartment; Davita thought that they were a cheerful family. • Davita learned about what “Gehennom” mean. (where you get punished for your sins) • Ruthie could not eat Davita’s food because Davita is not kosher.

  5. Plot summary • On Saturday morning in early November, Davita followed behind Ruthie and her mother. • Davita got into a four-story red-brick building set far from the curb. • Davita met David Dinn and his father in the synagogue.

Plot Summary • Davita went with her mother by subway to Manhattan. • Davita dislike the sound of the word----Europe. • Davita and her mother watched a play together, and it is about the big war in Europe and someone who tries to stop it. • A letter arrived from JakobDaw who was in Madrid • JakobDaw wrote about Michael, madness, cruelty, sadness, hopelessness; he wrote that “What a cruel century we now live in!” (pg126) • Michael came back home.

  7. Plot summary • Davita’s father cried out on night and he had a bad dream. (pg130) • The door harp was gone because Michael asked that it be moved to the bedroom. • Michael told Davita about his brother’s death and that the door harp is a gift from his brother.

  8. Plot summary • On a Friday night in February, they were eating supper in the kitchen. • Aunt Sarah did not want Michael to go back, but Anne said, “he ought to go back. People trust his stories about the war. He went there at my urging. It’s the right thing for him to do”. (pg142) • Michael told Davita the story in Centralia. He said, “there are two kinds of America. That’s what I realized that day. And I knew which kind I belonged to. That’s’ why I’m going back to Spain, my love”. (pg154)
