Healthy Active Kids • 25% of school age children in Arizona are overweight • 24% of low-income children between 3 and 5 years of age in Arizona are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. • (CDC PedNSS, 2002) • 24% of Arizona high-school students are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight (CDC YRBSS, 2003)

Healthy Active Kids Workshops • Eight workshops in Tucson, Phoenix, St Johns, Sierra Vista, Kingman in 2007 • 135 participants • They rated their knowledge about promoting nutrition and physical activity behaviors in children BEFORE this program was 3.7 on 5 point scale with 5 high and 4.5 afterwards.

Healthy Active Kids • 4-5 month follow up survey reported using Health Active Kids resources with 5064 additional people in their communities • Using materials at their school • • Added parent involvement • • Kids understand portion size • • Included “healthy kids” concepts at all school functions

  14. Healthy Active Kids • UA Cooperative Extension uses HAK concepts with AzNN schools & teachers & other partners • Focus on Capacity Building & training teachers and community partners • Integrate nutrition & physical activity in elementary grades

Why Healthy Active Kids for Schools • Good nutrition and moderate physical activity can improve students’ concentration and learning. • Connect to academic standards • Nutrition education is a part of • Your school’s wellness policy • Arizona Comprehensive Health and Physical Activity Standards • No Child Left Behind Act

  16. Challenges Working with Schools • Limited teacher time • AIMS testing - non-performing schools • Nutrition may not be a high priority • Getting hour reports back • Make it easy • Match nutrition concepts to Academic Standards • Build personal connections • . . . . . .

  17. Classy Moves • 2-3 minute activity break • Done inside classroom • Do a Classy Move after 30 minutes sitting or studying • 6 hour x 5 minutes/hr x 5 days = 150 minutes • Classy Moves gets your blood moving • Kids are meant to move!

  24. Quick Nutrition Messages 1.Choose theme for month. Ex. Focus on Fruits. 2.Choose the message for the current week. 3.Use the message during the school day. Examples: message on the board, reading the message over the morning announcements, 4.Use that message to generate discussion. Ex. If you want to do better in school, donユt forget to eat more fruits and veggies! Ask the students to raise their hands if they ate a fruit or a vegetable that morning.
