  1. HUMANITARIAN CALL TO ACTION RESPONDING TO SUPERCYCLONE YASA IN BENGAL

CONTEXT:  SUPERCYCLONE YASA hit West Bengal on May 26, 2021.  The very severe cyclonic storm Yaas, with wind speed racing from 120-140 kmph, battered the country’s eastern coast of West Bengal. Sectors like agri- culture, electricity, fishery, animal hus- bandry and horticulture were the worst affected as sea and river water gushed into the low-lying areas, inun- dating scores of villages.  West Bengal: Cyclone Yaas casts shad- ow on livelihood of fishermen in Digha

OUR SOLUTION: The We Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal and several Donors, is under- taking multi-dimensional actions to pro- vide immediate relief to 500 Cyclone YAAS affected families of Fishermen in Purba Medinipur district of West Ben- gal. We have partnered with like-minded Organizations, Municipalities and Compa- nies to address the environmental health in these villages and reduce risk of acute diarrheal diseases, reduce the incidence of anaemia and eye problems alongside intensified COVID response. We pro- pose to distribute dry ration, personal hy- giene kit and health/eye check-up camp for 500 families of Fishermen to ensure that they have enough food on the table for 15 days.Shri Akhil Giri, the Honoura- ble Minister of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal, along with senior officials of Fisheries, shall grace the camp at Digha scheduled for 9-10 July 2021.

Each family packet comprises of:  Rice: 7 Kg (500X7= 3500 kg)  Dal: 1 Kg (500X1=500 kg)  Edible oil: 1L (500 l)  Soyabean: 500 g (250 kg)  Sooji: 500 g (250kg)  Sugar– 1 kg (500 kg)  Soap– 2 (1000 pieces)  Hand sanitizer- (500 pieces)  ORS: 500 packets  IFA tablets: 500 strips  Eye drops and medicines: 20000  Masks– 2 (1000 pieces)  Jute sack – 1 (500 pieces)
