  5. To explore further (survival pointers of web references etc) • When searching online for Micromirror arrays, the industry knows them as Digital Micromirror Devices, or DMD’s • Projectors that use this technology are known as Digital Light Projectors, or DLP’s ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  6. Major Applications • Micromirrors are more commonly known as DMD’s (Digital Micromirror Device) • Most commonly found in projectors and other projecting devices • Lasers • Telescopes • Microscopes • Fiber Optics • Retinal Scans ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  7. Major Applications, Cont. • Basically anything that requires minute adjustments of light for focusing, clarity, or analysis ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  8. Basic Working Principle • Exactly what it sounds like: • A microscopic mirror that corresponds to one pixel • Uses MEMs technology (Micro Electro-Mechanical) systems to move the mirror ±10-12 degrees • Mirror is held in place by compliant torsion hinges • Two electrodes rest on either side of the hinges http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9c/Abe.jpg/220px-Abe.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c7/Digital_micromirror2.svg/220px-Digital_micromirror2.svg.png ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  9. Basic Working Principle, Cont. • Bias charges are put on the electrodes which create attractive and repulsive fields • The desired position of each mirror is held in an SRAM cell • When full, the SRAM cell’s charges are applied to the electrodes • The mirrors are held in this position until the next cycle http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/DLP+projector ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  10. Sample Application • Since the most well-known use is in Multimedia Projector technology, this is the example that will be used ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  11. Sample Application, Cont. • Projectors utilize the ability of micromirrors to move a very narrow beam of light very small angles ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  12. Sample Application, Cont. • Color is achieved by two different methods: • Rainbow Wheel • Prism Method ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  13. Sample Application, Cont. • Rainbow Wheel (Single Array) • Utilizes one Digital Light Processing (DLP) chip • A spinning color wheel, Red Green Blue (RGB) LEDs, or Lasers provide colors • These colors take turns projecting on the display • The DLP chip reflects them in proper amounts to create color ranges http://www.projector.com/resources/dlpprojectortechnology.php ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  14. Sample Application, Cont. • Prism Method (Multiple Arrays) • Utilizes multiple DMD chips • Usually three, for each primary color http://www.pctechguide.com/projectors/dlp-projectors ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  15. Sample Application, Cont. • A single light source or three colored light sources provide illumination • For a single light source, the light is broken into colors by a prism • The light is reflected through another prism towards the screen • For multiple light sources, each color is reflected by a DLP chip • These colors are reflected into a central prism • This is what is displayed on the screen ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  16. Sample Application, Cont. • Grayscales are accomplished by rapidly toggling on/off positions • Off position is usually a heat sink of some kind • On position is on screen of projection ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  17. Major Specifications • Resolution of array is what determines clarity of image • Higher resolution means more mirrors • SRAM speed determines refresh rate of mirrors • Color depth (How many bits of resolution per pixel) ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  18. Limitations • While HD resolutions are currently available, the larger the resolution, the more expensive • Fragile, should not be exposed to extreme knocks or shaking ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  19. Additional Information • Buying individual DMD chips is not really easy • TI owns patent, and want you to buy product with chip in it, not chip itself • Projectors • HDTV’s • Etc… • DLP projectors are available anywhere you can buy a regular LCD projector, but are more expensive • $700 for low end ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  20. Additional Information, Con. • TV’s are also available • Not as thin as LCD TV’s • Can be less expensive • Thousands of possible applications beyond entertainment • What light stream would you like to modify? ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
