  2. What is an adaptation? • A trait shaped by natural selection that increases an organism’s reproductive success

  3. Camouflage • Adaptations that allow a species to blend in with their environment • Allows organisms to become almost invisible to predators

  4. Mimicry • One species evolves to resemble another species • Can occur in a harmless species that has evolved to resemble a harmful species • Predators cant tell the difference between the mimic and the animal it is mimicking so they avoid them both

  5. 2 types of mimicry • Batesian mimicry – harmless species resembles harmful species • Mullerian mimicry – two dangerous/harmful species have the same warning patterns

  6. Antibacterial Resistance • Bacteria can become resistant to the antibiotics used to kill them.

  7. Convergent Evolution • Unrelated species evolve similar traits even though they live in different parts of the world. • Occurs in places that are geographically far apart but have similar ecology and climate.

  8. Coevolution • Species evolve in close relationship with other species • Sometimes the species are so close that the evolution of one species affects the evolution of other species • Ex. mutualism
