Terminology • Business process - A set of goal directed activities • Business process diagram - Business processes may be represented by process diagrams containing actors in swimlanes and actions connected by arrows. Decision points in a business process are represented by diamonds. • Swimlane - A vertical portion of a business process diagram • Actor - A person or computer who takes actions or makes decisions in a business process • As-is process - The way the process functions right now before any intervention or redesign • To-be process - The way the process functions after intervention or redesign

  9. Cloud Computing • A term used to describe computing services that live on the Internet rather than on a user’s workstation. Cloud services may be accessed from any internet enabled device. Gmail and Dropbox are services that live in the “cloud.” These services may be accessed by web browsers or even smartphones.

Summary & Conclusions • MIS helps design usable systems which enable efficient and effective business processes. • The process to build information systems focuses heavily on design. • It is cheaper to fix problems at the design stage. • Diagramming business processes serves our first two design stages. • Current State (As Is) and Requirements (To Be or Future Vision). • The course will use many cloud computing features. • Saves costs on software and enables collaboration.
