Purpose and Objectives: • The Board shall assist the Secretary of the Interior in performing his duties under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act by advising the Secretary on the needs of American Indian children with disabilities. Currently, the Bureau of Indian Education oversees a total of • 183 elementary, secondary, residential and peripheral dormitories across • 23 states. • 126 schools are tribally controlled or Grant Schools • 2 post-secondary schools: Haskell Indian Nations University and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute.
