  1. Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto Subject: Introdução à Medicina Professor: Dr. Altamiro Pereira Under the guidance of: Dr. João Fonseca Date: 19st December 2008 Systematic Review Feno: Influence of allergic rhinitis and atopy on its values

  2. Contents • Concepts • Rationale • Research Question and Aims • Methods of study • Trial searches • Search query • Inclusion and Exclusion criteria • Studies selection • Variables • Statistical analysis • Expected results

  3. NonAtopic Concepts Non-AllergicAsthma Healthy Compare the FENO values between the groups Key Words: asthma, exhaled nitric oxide, rhinitis, atopy, allergy

  4. Rationale • FeNO has been used as an asthma diagnostic test • FeNO values are influenced by a number of factors: age, sex, time of collection, etc… • The effect of atopy and allergic rhinitis on FeNO values has never been summarized • A better understanding of this influence can lead to a more accurate interpretation of FeNO as a diagnostic

  5. Research Question and Aims • Research questions • How does atopy influence FeNO values? • How does allergic rhinitis influence FeNO values? • Aim: • Improve the interpretation of FeNO values as a diagnostic test for asthma. • Assess how atopy and how allergic rhinitis affect exhaled nitric oxide values.

  6. Methods • Type of study • Systematic review • Databases for literature seach: • Pubmed • ISI Web of Knowledge • Scopus

  7. Trial searches

  8. Electedquery (Exhaled nitric oxide OR Nitric oxide OR FeNO OR eNO) AND (“Allergic Rhinitis” OR Atopy OR “Skin prick test” OR “Prick test” OR “Ig E” OR “Specific Ig”)

  9. InclusionandExclusioncriteria • Inclusion criteria • Peer-reviewed full-text articles • Articles with original data • Exclusion criteria • Articles published before 1 January 2001 • Articles written in any language other than English, Portuguese or Spanish

  10. StudiesSelection

  11. Variables – data collection • Population • Number of individuals • Age • Gender • Height • Number of asthmatics • Number of atopics • Number of healthy individuals • Number of asthmatics with atopy • Number of asthmatics with allergic rhinitis • Study • Type • Diagnostic methods used • Univariate or multivariate analysis

  12. Statistical analysis • If data allows it: one or more meta-analysis • If meta-analysis isn’t possible, the data will be analysed independently and qualitatively: • Analysis of FeNO values variations caused by atopic conditions in asthmatic and healthy individuals. • Analysis of FeNO values variations caused by allergic rhinitis, in asthmatic and healthy individuals. • Summary of the articles’ conclusion

  13. Expectedresults • FeNO values higher in atopic subjects than healthy ones. • Elevated FeNO values in subjects with more than one atopic condition. • FeNO’s usability as an asthma diagnosis won’t be hindered by these variations if proper interpretation takes place.
