  4. State of Water • Ongoing drought effecting majority of Texas

  5. State of Water cont’d • Demand for water expected to increase as population continues to rise. • Next 50 years: • Demand - 17M acre-feet to 22M acre-feet • Existing supply – 18M acre-feet to 15M acre-feet (reservoir sedimentation, aquifer depletion) • Management and Planning of water resources is crucial.

Texas Water Development Board • MISSION: • To provide leadership, planning, financial assistance, information, and education for the conservation and responsible development of water for Texas • Provides loans and grants to local governments for water supply, water quality, wastewater, flood control and conservation projects • Collect data and conduct studies concerning the fresh-water needs of the State

Texas Natural ResourcesInformation System • TNRIS is the State GIS Data Clearinghouse • Strategic Mapping Program • Produces, maintains, and enhances statewide digital geographic data themes in partnership with geographic information systems (GIS) professionals from public and private organizations. • Hydrography, elevation, boundaries, imagery and more…

  9. Did you know? • Approximately 95% of Texas is privately-owned • The Texas NHD is comprised of over 2,000,000 features and contains over 750,000 miles of streams/rivers

  10. Challenges • Management of Multi-resolution NHD • Maintenance required: Spatial Accuracy, Attribution, WBD delineations along coast • Funding • Pool of Associate Stewards, mostly State and Local entities • Requirement to have ArcGIS, training on the NHD Edit Tool to participate

  11. Solutions • Focus on maintenance of 1:24,000 product • Grassroots effort, using web solutions to power the NHD program • Establish NHD Advisory Board • Virtual Earth platform will allow for broad spectrum of Stewardship participants
