  2. St George’s Cross In 1194 Richard 1 created the Saint George’s Cross. The flag had a white background and a red cross, it was used as the English flag. The St George’s Cross is featured in many other flags and coats of arms across the world.

  3. St Andrew’s Flag In 1180 William I introduced the St Andrew’s Flag. In 1385 it was made compulsory that Scottish soldiers wore it on their uniform. After Queen Elizabeth had died King James VI became James I of England, but he couldn’t decide which flag to use.

  4. The Joining of the English and Scottish Flags In 1606 King James introduced the first Union Flag. Some Scottish people weren’t happy that their flag was hidden behind the English Flag. They made an unofficial version.

  5. St Patrick’s Flag It consists of a red saltire on a white background. In 1800 Ireland joined the United Kingdom making it the British Isles.

  6. The Union Jack The Union Jack used to be called The Union Flag it became known as The Union Jack because it was flown from the ship’s jack staff. The Welsh Flag was not included in the Union Jack because it was already part of England when it was made.
