  1. Implementing a Regional Shorebird and Waterfowl Survey and Monitoring Database John D. Stanton Robin Hunnewell 59th Annual SEAFWA Conference St. Louis, Missouri

  2. Current Uses of the web-based SAMBI Database: • To determine distribution and trends of waterfowl and shorebirds. • To track the timing of shorebird migration. • To note the occurrence of rare or high priority species. • To provide “real-time” buildup and declines of shorebirds for habitat management planning.

  3. Current Information and Uses of the SAMBI Website:-Cont’d. • To provide a network for monitoring color-banded shorebirds. • To provide the public access to waterfowl and shorebird numbers via the Internet. • To improve management decisions to allocate managed shorebird habitat.

  4. The SAMBI Website • A Public Site:http://samigbird.fws.gov • A Secure Site:http://shorebird.ncusfws.org* • (*Requires username and password to access.) **Use of the SAMBI database is VOLUNTARY.

  10. *Shorebird Habitat Planning* *A Management Tool:* Goal (yellow)-To display habitat goals by site for regional planning (e.g. 4,000 acres or managed habitat). Actual (blue)-To display actual acres provided during migration.

  11. A Regional survey and monitoring need….. “The PRISM Connection” Program for Regional and International Shorebird and Monitoring (PRISM)

  12. PRISM and SAMBI • PRISM is a blueprint for surveying shorebirds in North America, designed to meet the monitoring goals of the U.S. and Canadian Shorebird Conservation Plans (Brown 2001; Donaldson 2001). • There are 27 PRISM sites in the Southeast that contribute to the SAMBI database.

  13. PRISM sites in the Southeast

  14. Participation to date: • National Wildlife Refuges - Mostly Southeast Units • State Management Areas - Southeast • Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences- Volunteers from Maine to Florida monitoring shorebirds • National Park Service - Mostly Southeast Units • Some Private lands

  15. NOW AND IN THE FUTURE……… • Specifically, • Incorporate Marshbird/Waterbird Monitoring • Swallow-tailed Kite • Other species • Expand to Flyway Scale • Rename the effort
