  1. Doing Goodthe wrong way Lessons from King David and the Ark of God 1 Chronicles 13-15

  2. Doing Good or Doing God’s Word? • Many religious people are interested in doing many “good” works in the name of God • God is interested in divine order! • The end does not justify the means; both the end and means must be justified (authorized) • We should not do evil that good may come (Rom. 3:8; 6:1)

  3. Doing Goodthe Wrong Way • Transporting the ark of God from the Philistines (1 Chron. 13,15; 2 Sam. 6) • the ark was among the Philistines 7 months and at Kiriathjearim 20 years • King David wanted to do a “good” work (1 Chron. 13:1-4) • David returned the ark on a “new cart” (1 Chron. 13:5-8; comp. 1 Sam. 6:7) • Uzzah is struck dead for touching the ark (1 Chron. 13:9-14; 2 Sam. 6:7) • David asked how to transport the ark too late (1 Chron. 13:12)

  4. Doing Goodthe Wrong Way • Transporting the ark of God from the Philistines (1 Chron. 13,15; 2 Sam. 6) • David realized that they had not followed God’s word (1 Chron. 15:1-15) • the ark was to be transported in a specified way (Ex. 25:10-14; Num. 3:27-31; 4:1-15) • a man died because of doing good in the wrong way! • in contrast, the Lord blessed those who did his will (1 Chron. 15:26)

  5. Doing Goodthe Wrong Way • Other Bible examples… • Nadab and Abihu (Lev. 10:1-2) • Saul (1 Sam. 13:8-14; 15:9,15,21-23) • Uzziah (2 Chron. 26:16-21) • Religious of Jesus’ day (Mt. 7:21-23) • The Pharisees (Mk. 7:10-13) • Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11)

  6. Doing Goodthe Wrong Way • Modern examples among the denominations… • a “new” mode of baptism (sprinkling) • a “new” way to sing (instruments) • a “new” salvation (faith only) • a “new” structure (denominations) • a “new” creed (catechisms, manuals) • a “new” head (Pope, president) • the list goes on and on

  7. Doing Goodthe Wrong Way • Modern examples among brethren… • changing the organization of the local church to include a “new” sponsoring church that will do big projects • changing the mission of the local church to include “new” social and recreational activities • changing the means of work to include “new” human institutions (college, orphan home, missionary society, etc.) • changing the worship to include “new” groups (solo, choir, instruments)

  8. God’s Work in God’s Way • “Good works” are prepared by God (Eph. 2:10) • It is not enough to do “good works.” We must do God’s work in God’s way (1 Cor. 4:6; Rom. 10:17; Col. 3:17)
