Students should be able to • Brief and co-ordinate with • Diving Officers & Shore marshals • Dive crew • Before and during operations • Read Tide tables • Use a compass and transits for navigation • Explain the function of V.H.F. radio • Demonstrate First Aid and the use of O² on a dive-boat • Initiate the procedure for lost or over due divers • Use systematic procedure to • Return dive boat equipment • Report any lost or damaged equipment • Explain the importance of such a system
Students should be able to • React appropriately to: • Becoming disabled • Starting to sink • Being adrift • Requiring a tow • Catching fire • Needing to indicate distress • Prepare a dive-boat to be towed • Obtain and decipher weather information • Carry out pre-start checks • Carry out checks on all boat equipment • Demonstrate the correct use of safety equipment
Students should be able to • Launch and recover a dive boat safely • Prepare boat and trailer for towing • Safely re-fuel a dive boat and safely stow fuel at sea • Equip a dive boat for use on the water • Select and use appropriate personal safety equipment and clothing • Demonstrate the correct use of steering and other controls by: • Turning a boat in a confined area at low speed • Holding off at low speed • Planing at high speed • Completing S-turns and U-turns at high speed • Manoeuvre a dive-boat at close quarters in sea conditions
Students should be able to • Display an awareness of other water users • Demonstrate a knowledge of: • Ropes • Selection of relevant knots • Safely deploy and recover divers from the water • Demonstrate procedures to recover a man overboard • Secure dive boat to a mooring buoy • Leave and come alongside a jetty or stationary boat • Anchor a dive boat • Lay and recover marker buoys and shot-lines • Diagnose and correct minor engine problems
