  4. Relationship of sound to picture • Diegetic- sound that belongs to the world that the characters or places on the picture inhabit. This can be divided into internal and external diegetic. External diegetic is the sounds that are heard when actions happen on the screen eg gun shots and crashes, door slams, music from an onscreen radiio etc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nbri7Qi9I1Q • Internal diegetic is the sound that is heard within the character’s head such as a flashback or thought process http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBq3Bu9hDP4 • Non-diegetic sound is sound that does not belong to the world of the images. The obvious example is background music that the characters in the picture could not hear unless it was a radio in the scene. Other examples are sounds such as in a horror film that are there to give the atmosphere but are not heard by the characters.

  6. Music • Themes • Melody associated with a character (leitmotif) • Mood-background music that gives the mood of the scene • Action-music that matches action on the screen • Foreshadowing (sfx also do this) • Sense of place

Sound effects • Sound effects can be diegetic or non-diegetic but are described by the way that they are recorded. • Foley- sound effects that are recorded in the studio by Foley artists while watching the film • Pleonastic sound- defined as exaggerated sound effects produced either electronically or using Foley techniques in the studio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-DeI3ohVbY • Watch the two Lord of the Rings “the making of on the WKC media page”

  8. Ambient Sound • Ambient sound is the sound of the background of wherever is being shown on the screen and makes it sound as the characters on screen will hear it. This could be a real or imaginary space ie it could be on a spaceship in the future or a place in history. The sound has to be created in this case as it would not be possible to record a street from history or a spaceship. For more modern ambient sound it is possible to record on location. It is important to record more than is actually needed so that the ambient sound can be used to fill in gaps and ensure continuity. • Eg. Ambient sound of a street will have cars going past, distant conversations, possibly planes going overhead, etc • Eg. Ambient sound of a classroom might be computer keyboard sounds, hissing of projector, pens on paper etc • Eg. Sounds of battle might be explosions, tanks driving around, distant gunfire, shouts and screams in the background. Specific screams from a person being shown being hurt would be a sound effect rather than ambient sound.

  9. Voice Voice – either dialogue or narration Dialogue: when two or more characters are talking to each other. Dialogue will give the viewer information about the relationship that they have, or will tell a back story to show what has happened and is vital to most films and TV but is also used in some games to help with the back story or help the action move on. Can also be a single character talking to themselves (or as an audience when we hear their thoughts) Narration/Voiceover: When a voice is talking over the images and telling the story or giving information. Used in documentaries, some films, adverts, trailers and in some games. Examples include Shawshank Redemption in film and Star Trek (Captains log…)

Silence • Silence is not considered from Silent Movies as these were originally silent as they didn’t have the technology to add sound • Silence is used as dramatic effect –in space where there is no sound (2001 A Space Odyessy) or to make a scene more intense. • It is not very common as we expect there to be sound or music in most media • Silence is where there is literally no sound, it is not silent if there is any sound happening such as music
