In whichever form (VHS, DVD, MPEG), the Moving Image: is one of the most versatile tools within education. applies to the teaching of all subjects not just Film and Media Studies. can give students the opportunity to visualise alien concepts gives students a chance to engage with text by helping them to visualise particular themes or learning objectives

Streaming media • The definition of streaming is: • Media that is transmitted over the internet in a continuous fashion often playing as it arrives and in real time. • The user cannot easily retain a copy • Sometimes impractical for educational use owing to unreliability of Internet connections and uncertain longevity of web sites • Works well with short or segmented materials (though some sites, usually American, stream entire feature films) • Quality and speed depend on connection: 28.8K, 56K modems to broadband (DSL/cable, T1) • Ever-expanding number of video streaming sites, with many offering material for free • For example, BBC’s site focuses on resources using streaming media

Downloadable video • The user may be able to retain copy • The user may be able to manipulate images • Preferred solution for learning and teaching in the UK • Nervousness of rights-holders can be overcome by watermarking, DOGs (Digital Onscreen Graphic), authentication, etc • Commercial producers experimenting with mixed economy e.g. low quality downloads available for free, high quality available for purchase

Education Media OnLine • Over 1500 titles delivered for download to teachers, students and academics • Cleared content for a ten year period • Footage which can be used in a range of subjects from History and Medicine to Art, English, Healthcare, Psychology and Sociology • Free service through a licence subscription • JISC-funded service to release online moving image and sound content to UK Further and Higher education • Collaboration between the BUFVC’s Managing Agent & Advisory Service, Open University’s Rights Department and EDINA • www.emol.ac.uk

Moving Image Gateway • Gateway to online resources covering the use of moving images and sound in education • Over 800 entries so far and constantly growing • Divided into four main subjects areas: • Arts & Humanities • Bio-Medical • Science & Technology, • Social Sciences • Subdivided into over forty subject areas • Emphasis on streamed and downloadable media • Website of the month feature • www.bufvc.ac.uk/gateway

Off Air Recordings • Off-air recording is probably part of the majority of institutions’ daily routine • Off air recording is simply recording broadcast material which can be used within teaching and learning, provided that the institution has an ERA licence (Educational Recording Agency) • Even with the ERA Licence, the user must be aware of what can and cannot be done when using broadcast material

Off Air Recording Back-up Service • Television recording back-up service run on behalf of UK universities and colleges • Available as part of BUFVC membership to any institution holding an Educational Recording Agency (ERA) licence for off-air recording • Recordings available from 1 June 1998 • 24-hour coverage of UK terrestrial channels BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4, C5, plus BBC3 and BBC4 • Recorded using digital technology, MPEG2 at 4.5 megabits per second • New service offering encoded copies
