How? • Ranked high in the Bolshevik Party • Became general secretary of the Communist Party • Made connections with many people in the government and kept his connections low profile • His positions gave him insight on who could be trusted and who could not • Made plans to industrialize Russia/ the Soviet Union • made huge increases in Soviet productivity • Purged “the party of enemies” which resulted in the execution of thousands and the exile of millions to slave labor camps

  5. Interesting Facts • He escaped form Siberia 7 times • In Siberia, he picked up the pseudonym Joseph Stalin • IosifVissarionovichDzhugashvili was his real name
