Four Certification Types of Driving • Non-Excepted Interstate – The driver will be operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) outside of Michigan for ‘non-excepted’ purposes; this is explained below. • Excepted Interstate – The driver will be operating a CMV outside of Michigan, but only for ‘excepted’ purposes. • Non-Excepted Intrastate – The driver will be operating a CMV ONLY in Michigan. • Excepted Intrastate – The driver will be operating a CMV ONLY in Michigan and ONLY for an excepted purpose.

  4. Ways to submit your Certification • Online at www.michigan.gov/CDL • Fax to the CDL Help Desk at (517) 636-4359 • Mail to: MI Department of State • CDL Help Desk Unit • 7064 Crowner Drive • Lansing, MI 48918 • Go to your local Department of State branch office

  5. Your Responsibilities A Michigan CDL holder must provide a self-certification of the type of commercial driving they will be doing (and medical certification documents, if required) whenever conducting a CDL transaction with the Secretary of State beginning January 30, 2012. CDL holders who fail to self-certify by January 30, 2014 will be downgraded. Please consult the website for more details about the consequences of non-compliance.

  6. Self-Certify Commercial Driving Type Online! Submit your Medical Certificate Online! You must have: The following information as it appears on your driver’s license: 1. • name • driver’s license number • date of birth • eye color 2. The last four digits of your social security number. 3. An electronic copy of your signedmedical examiner’s certificate (if you self-certify to non-excepted Interstatedriving).
