  1. Palm Reading:fact or Fiction Project 1 Done By: Yasseen Al-Sharif Zaineh Bisharat

  2. Chiromancy or Palm Reading • is the art of characterization and foretelling the future through the study of the palm. • Origin: India. • Spread to: China, Tibet, Egypt, Persia, Europe & Greece.

  3. Method: By examining one’s hand, their future life could be determined; however, its dependant upon: • Lines of the hand. E.g. Heart line, life line, head line etc. • Chirognomy or bumps of the hand. Interpretations made depending on their different shapes, sizes & intersection. SOME others examine characteristics of : • Fingers • Fingernails • Fingerprints • Skin texture & color

  4. Interpretation of the hand shape There are 4 major types of hand shapes: • Earth hands are generally broad, square palms and fingers, thick or coarse skin, and ruddy color. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually equal to the length of the fingers. • Air hands exhibit square or rectangular palms with long fingers and sometimes protruding knuckles, low-set thumbs, and dry skin. The length is usually less than the length of the fingers. • Water hands are long, sometimes oval-shaped palm, with long, flexible, conical fingers. The length is usually less than the width across the widest part of the palm, and usually equal to the length of the fingers. • Fire hands have a square or rectangular palm shape, are flushed or pink skin, with shorter fingers. The length is usually greater than the length of the fingers.

  5. Hand lines:

  6. To what extent is this true? • The lines of the palm change throughout our entire lifetime, evidence that the interpretation relies on is constantly changing. • The prevalent image of palmistry is not an accurate one - palmistry is usually associated with fortune telling, crystal balls, & special psychic abilities. • No serious or in depth research has been associated with it.

  7. Palm reading is a pseudoscience • Beliefs that are claimed to be science but which do not meet the criteria of science are called pseudo sciences. • Many sources prove that palm reading is a pseudoscience as it does not meet criteria’s of science. Some of which: • http://palm-reading.motime.com/ • http://www.gurl.com/play/games/select/main/0,,710279,00.html • http://www.mscok.edu/~bstewart/bstewart/classes/zoology/pseudosc.htm
