Odyssey: Calypso’s Island Setting: Ocean, Calypso’s island Summary: Odysseus is being held captive by the nymph Calypso, who loves him. Hermes tells her she must free him, so she tells Odysseus to build a raft and set sail. Once he has built the raft, he is afloat for seven days and seven nights; on the eighth morning, Poseidon sends a storm to terrify and torture him. His raft breaks apart, and he is left adrift at sea.
Archetypes The Siren: Calypso traps Odysseus and makes him live with her for seven years, even though he is married. She also kills his other companions. She represents someone who is both lovely and deadly. Wings: Odysseus builds himself wings to fly over the violent ocean; wings represent freedom and escape.
Theme No matter the odds, never give up. This is shown when Odysseus must swim nonstop for three days to reach land. Though it seems impossible, and various threats almost kill him, he manages to make it to land and is taken in by friendly Phaeacians. Finally, after ten years of trying to find safety, he is in safe hands.
