Lesson 1

who wrote the bible

Lesson 1 – The Bible

Who wrote the Bible?
  • It is the Word of God.
  • God told the men who wrote it what they must write down.

'All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work'. 2 Timothy3:15

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.2 Peter 1:20-21

Lesson 2 – God and Creation

  • God.....
  • existed before the world was made
  • has no beginning
  • will have no end

Psalm 90:2

'Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.'

Lesson 2 – God and Creation

How were Man and Woman created different to the animals?

Then God said,

"Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,

and let them rule over .. all creatures …..”(Genesis 1v26)

Physically- Their form or shape was like God

Mentally – They were made with the ability to understand the Word of God

the first law

Lesson 2 – God and Creation

The First Law

And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die. Gen 2:16-17

  • God did not create Adam and Eve as robots. They had freewill.
  • To test their obedience, God gave Adam and Eve one law to keep
  • Just like us today, Adam and Eve had the choice to obey or disobey God
  • When we obey God we honor him, and He is pleased with us, and He then can reward us with life

where did the serpent come from

Lesson 3 – The Problem of Sin

Where did the Serpent come From?
  • An animal made by God:
    • 'Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made.”Genesis 3:1
  • It was part of God’s “very good” creation
    • “ God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”Genesis 1:31
  • It is likely that God created the serpent especially to test Adam & Eve’s obedience to him
    • “more crafty” = cunning & deceitful
    • Could talk and reason with man

Lesson 3 – The Problem of Sin

She was deceived!

Why did Eve listen to the serpent?

And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.1 Timothy 2:14

HOW WAS SHE DECEIVED?

  • Listening to the serpent
  • Listening to her own lusts
the source of temptation sin

Lesson 3 – The Problem of Sin

The Source of Temptation & Sin

Genesis 3:6

Good for food

Pleasant to the eyes

Desired to make one wise

1st John 2:15,16

Lust of the flesh

Lust of the eyes

Pride of life

When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. James 1:13-15

consequence of sin

Lesson 3 – The Problem of Sin

Consequence of Sin
  • Genesis 2:17 & 3:19  Death
  • Romans 5:12
    • “Sin entered into the world”
    • “and death through sin”
    • “and so death passed upon all men”
    • “for all have sinned”

We inherit Adam and Eve’s fallen nature

death a state of hopelessness

Lesson 3 – The Problem of Sin

Death: A State of Hopelessness
  • Cessation of life, thought, actionPsalm 6:5; 30:9; 88:10-12; Ecclesiastes 9:5-10; Isaiah 38:18,19
  • A state of silence Psalm 115:17
  • A condition of corruption Acts 13:36
  • Life & immortality promised not possessed 2 Timothy 1:10
  • Apart from resurrection, the dead have perished 1 Corinthians 15:1-19

Hebrews 2:14

“Since then the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewisealso partook of the same (nature), that through death He might render powerless (destroy)him who had the power of death, that is, the devil”

  • Jesus was born with exactly the same nature as us

The Devil that Christ destroyed = human nature

Lesson 8 – Salvation Through Jesus Christ

The importance Jesus’ last meal

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."

In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.“

For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

  • Jesus commanded his disciples (followers) to eat bread and drink wine to remember his life and death.
  • Believers remember Jesus in this way, typically once a week.

Lesson 8 – Salvation Through Jesus Christ

The Death & Resurrection of Jesus
  • Jesus was crucified – nailed to a tree and left to die in great pain.
  • As a sinless representative of humanity, Jesus died for our sins.
  • After 3 days God resurrected Jesus
  • Because Jesus did no sin, God would not leave him in the grave. So God raised him from the dead and gave him immortal life – never to die again.

  • But he will not force us to do it.
  • We must decide for ourselves. We must choose to follow Jesus as his disciples.
  • For those who do decide to obey God, their lives will be changed.

baptism to be buried under water

Lesson 10 – The Meaning of Baptism

Baptism = “to be buried under water”

Baptism is like being buried with Jesus

Don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.. Romans 6:3-5

what about infant sprinkling
What about infant sprinkling?
  • Not taught in the Bible:
    • The word “Baptism” means to fully immerse in water
    • The examples of baptism in the Bible are full immersion (Mark 1:5, 9-10; John 3:23; Acts 8:36-29)
    • A baby cannot “believe the gospel” and “repent”
  • Historically, the Roman Catholic Church changed from immersion to sprinkling in 1311 AD

Very important point!

    • The earth to be very good, as it was when he first made it
    • The curse on the earth to be removed, so food is plentiful
    • Sin and death to be removed
    • The earth to be filled with people who worship and honor him
    • Such people to live for ever.
  • When will this happen?

When Jesus comes back to the earth!

    • Judgment of those responsible
    • Faithful believers rewarded with immortality
