Britain –French Rivalry • History • For centuries the British & the French had been fighting territory, trade routes, etc. = $$$$$$$ • The colonists also felt this tension • Eventually the population grew large enough in the Br. Col. to be closing the gap on the Fr. Col. • Ohio was ground zero • Fur traders were on the frontlines • Forts were built by both side to protect their claims

  3. Britain –French Rivalry • Native Americans Take Sides • The Fr. & the Br. Knew the help of the Nat. Am. Was vital in winning N.A. • The French had better relations with the Nat. Am. • mostly fur trappers • adopted Nat. Am. customs • and sent missionaries preaching the Good News • The Br. Wanted the land

Britain –French Rivalry • The Iroquois Confederacy • What is a confederacy? a union or combination of peoples, states, etc.; alliance; league Might show up on the test?! • Founded 1570 in what is NY today • The most powerful group of Nat. Am. • Included 5 nations: Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Cayuga, Onondaga (others later joined or were conquered)

  5. Britain –French Rivalry • Pressure from the Br. Led to trading alliances • Which later meant taking the side of the British • This gave Britain the advantage in N.A.

American Colonists Take Action • Washington’s 1st Command • Prequel – the Gov of VA sent Geo Wash to tell the French they were trespassing- they ignored him • The next year he is sent with 150 members of the militia to build a fort where Pittsburgh is today • The Fr. were already building Ft. Duquesne • Wash. Builds Ft. Necessity nearby • He attacks a Fr scouting party • Gets surrounded and captured • Released • Becomes a hero for striking the 1st blow

American Colonists Take Action • The Albany Plan of Union • At the same time reps from the colonies met in Albany to discuss the threat of war • Wanted: • to protect themselves • Convince the Iroquois to help against the Fr • This plan called for 1 general gov over the colonies • It would have had power • Taxes • Troops • Trade • Not one colony agreed WHY?
