Today’s Session’s Goals and Activities • Explain feedback on Assignment 1c by examining scores. • Discuss remaining sessions and writing assignments by analyzing the Inventory of Key Terms and • Analyzing the significance of the development of the UFW and the agricultural labor strikes to the Chicano Movement.

Assignment 2b: A “Within Group” Analysis Develop a thesis that characterizes the relationship between two or more crosscutting themes from our course (i.e. labor and movement, representation and discrimination, intra-ethnic groups and community, etc.) and their significance to the collective experience of one of the racial or ethnic groups covered in our class.To date, we have discussed Native Americans, African Americans and Mexican Americans. Defend your thesis by discussing historical developments presented in lecture, videos, and Takaki’sA Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America.

Looking Ahead • Assignment 2b – Within Groups – Due Monday, November 19th • Class will not meet on Wednesday, November 21st • Assignment 2c – Across groups (comparing two groups with at least two themes) – Prompt posted next Monday. Due Wednesday, November 28th(via email) • Monday and Wednesday after Thanksgiving Holiday – Either guest lecture or online sessions. • Final Paper – Exploring a Thesis of Racial Inequality (applying theoretical framework from Part I to historical content of Part II). Prompt posted next Monday. Due by Monday, Dec. 10th (via email)

  8. Course Goals • This is not a history course. Our primary focus is on concepts and theories that have influenced the collective experiences of racial and ethnic groups in the United States. • We will not cover every ethnic group. Focusing on the four that were central to the US becoming more conscious of diversity and inequality. • Focusing on concepts that can be applied here and in international contexts to explore how minority groups are socially, politically, economically and culturally situated in other nations. • We study selected historical moments that illustrate race and ethnicity as evolving social constructs that are historical and political in nature and reflect the interests of the dominant culture (Omi and Winant).
