  1. Order of Operation!

  2. Vocabulary • Expression • A number or group of numbers with operation symbols. • Order of Operation • Rules you must follow to solve the expression.

  3. Steps in order of operations • ALWAYS complete what is in Parenthesis first!! • Then do multiplication and division in order from left to right. • Finally, do addition and subtraction in order from left to right.

  4. Steps in Order of Operations • P (parenthesis) • M (multiply) • D (division) • S (subtraction) • A (addition) • People Move Down South Alot Since multiplication and division are inverse of each other, you do which ever one of those come first in the expression. Since addition and subtraction are inverse of each other, you do which ever one of those come first in the expression.

  5. Examples • Simplify 12 x (4-2) • P (parenthesis) • Complete what you see in parenthesis first, so you would subtract 4-2=2. • Rewrite what you have left and solve • 12 x 2=24

  6. More Examples • Simplify 14+10÷2x3 • P (parenthesis first) there is none so now we move on. • M (multiplication if it is first from left to right) in this example we would multiply AFTER we divide because it follows the division sign. • D (division) in this case we will divide 10 by 2 first. Now rewrite

  7. Continued • Simplify 14+10÷2x3 • We divided 10 by 2 and got 5 so now we have • 14+5x3 • Next step is to multiply 5 times 3 and rewrite. -14+15 • Now we add and get 29 for our answer

  8. You try these! • (14-7)+3 • 6+12÷3 • (5+2)x3 • 27÷9-1
