Concepts • Mentor - Latin, from Greek Mentōr (1616 ) • 1: inspired by the character of Mentor in Homer's Odyssey:a friend of Odysseus entrusted with the education of Odysseus' son Telemachus • 2 a: a trusted counselor or guide • Apprenticeship -Formal instruction in a precise curriculum can be done by a 3rd party or self imposed

A good mentor… • is someone absolutely credible • tells you things that you may not want to hear • makes you want to become better • makes you feel secure enough to take risks • gives you the confidence • supports your attempts to set stretch goals • presents opportunities and highlights challenges

  4. What can you do? Find a mentor. Someone who: • Listens and responds in ways that show understanding • Encourages and gives the protégé confidence • Gives honest feedback • Encourages the protégé to do better and to take risks. • Shares ideas, presents opportunities and gives challenges • Learns from the protégé’s questions and experiences. The best mentoring is two way in which people with different experiences and places in life learn from one another Be a mentor.
