  2. Abridge – verbshorten • Larry’s school day was abridged because he had an early dismissal for a dentist appointment. • She read an abridged version of Pride and Prejudice; it was 200 pages shorter than the original book.

Antidote – nounsomething that relieves or prevents; a remedy that counteracts the effects of poison • I have an antidote for stress – a month-long tropical vacation. • After the girl was rushed to the hospital, the doctor administered the antidote to the poison swiftly and the patient survived.

  4. Autonomous – adjindependent • Mrs. Sullivan’s students were focused, autonomous workers during the Greek mythology unit. They took responsibility for their projects and worked independently with OUTSTANDING results!

  5. Bolster – verbto support; to strengthen • Working out has bolstered my stamina; my strength and endurance has improved. • Learning new words can bolster your vocabulary comprehension.
