Service Skills Australia • Who are they? - One of eleven Industry Skills Councils - Incorporated not for profit company - Funded by the Australian government (DEEWR) • What do they do? - Develop and maintain nationally recognised skills standards • (Training Packages) for the service industries • - Assist individuals and businesses to access training and assessment • within these standards • - Assist registered training organisations to provide quality training • and assessment using Training Packages Hospitaltiy Training Package- SIT07

  3. What is a Training Package? • A set of nationally endorsed standards and qualifications • Describes the skills and knowledge required to perform effectively in the workplace – within a competency based framework • Developed by industry requirements Hospitaltiy Training Package- SIT07

What a Training Package is not • Training Packages do not describe how skills and knowledge should be attained or the method of training delivery -Training Providers develop the ‘curriculum’ or the ‘how’ based on the learner and their local industry requirements Hospitaltiy Training Package- SIT07

Tourism, Hospitality & Events Training Package • Endorsed in December 2007 • 31 qualifications • More than 350 units of competency • Extensive industry consultation • Over 500 responses from industry during review • Updated competency standards to meet current industry requirement and trends • Employability skills explicitly embedded Hospitaltiy Training Package- SIT07

Industry Concerns with Delivery Industry Concerns SSA Response Assessment conducted in Inappropriate Environments without industry standard Equipment SIT07 includes Assessment Environment Requirements Increase of ‘Holistic Units’ The need for an increase in the quality of Graduates who have undertaken institutional Based delivery with the industry exposure – Not the ‘apprenticeship’ model Lack of currency in assessors knowledge of Industry standards and expectations Enhanced requirements for Vocational competency of Assessors Enhanced guidance provided in Evidence Guides of Units to Support quality/consistency of outcomes Lack of consistency of assessment outcomes Hospitaltiy Training Package- SIT07
