  1. Name: ……………………………………………. Group: ……………. Terminology Eco-design is an approach to design of a product with special consideration for the environmental impacts of the product during its whole lifecycle Renewable is the ability for a product, a source of energy etc. to be reproduced within 50 years. i.e. a pine tree is a renewable source as it can be reproduced within 30-40yrs. Crude oil (which is what we make plastic from) is not renewable because crude oil is a fossil fuel which takes the earth millions of years to produce! Sustainability can be achieved by replanting forests as they are cut down, or by recycling and reusing materials. Up-cycle this a relatively new word which means taking old products and “doing them up” either into an up-dated new version or into a brand new product. • CONTEXT • The UK produces 228 million tonnes of waste each year, of which 35% was collected for recycling . This figure is still quite low compared to some of our neighbouring EU countries. There is still a great deal of waste which could be recycled that ends up in landfill sites which is harmful to the environment. • Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. Did you know that: • 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. • 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. • 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. • 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials • As designers it is our responsibility to design new products from either reused products, recycled materials or reduces the amount of energy required during manufacturer or their function. What can you design to help solves some of the worlds recycling problems?

  2. Examples Key Words We have this book in our school library – it’s a great read! Cardboard high chair Recycle Sustainability Environmental Impact Landfills Materials Ecological Eco-design Energy Reducing Reusing Helping Supporting Future Consumption Fossil fuels Positive Negative Generations Responsibility Accountable Up-cycle Maintain Help Manufacture Greener Longer lasting Unique design Better use Waste reduction Excessive Renewable Shopping Trolley chair Your Design challenge in brief….. You are to design a product that makes use of recycled materials, reuses materials or reduces material/energy consumption. (you could even try making it too!) Rolled paper coffee table Google this word for some great ideas (images) Useful web links to find out more: http://recycling-guide.org.uk/rrr.html http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0775891.html http://www.reducereuserecycle.co.uk/greenarticles/recycling_facts.php http://earth911.com/news/2013/02/22/upcycled-ethical-ocean-products/ http://hipcycle.com/ (this is really quite interesting!) 3. Task 1 • RESEARCH: Look at some existing products that use recycled materials, reuses materials or their design reduces the amount of materials used. You can use additional paper if you wish. • Write detailed comments on: • What you think of the design. • Who would use it and why. • What the design is made from and why. • How the design helps the environment. EXAMPLE This product can be closed and easily transported. This product is better for the environment than making a new cat bed as it makes use of products which normally would go into a landfill. It requires very little labour and machining to make this product and therefore reduces factory emissions. Stick a copy of the product image here Made from a recycled 1950/60’s luggage bag and redesigned to make a cat bed These products would appeal to anyone who likes retro products, pet lover and the environmental conscious person The feet on this product are made from recycled wood that has been sanded and glued into a new shape The materials used to make the cushion were previously curtains and the wadding inside made from natural fibres http://inhabitat.com/keep-your-kitty-cozy-in-these-upcycled-vintage-suitcase-beds/

  4. 5. Task 2 • DESIGNING: Create a new product that makes use of recycled materials, reuses materials or reduces the use of materials/energy. Draw the product in detail and fully label and annotate your drawing. Use additional paper if you wish. • Write detailed evaluative comments on: • What you think of the design and how could it be improved. • Suggest who would use it and why. • Label what the design is made from and why. • Explain how the design helps the environment. • You may wish to have a go at making an example (prototype) of this product for additional marks!
