  1. What Are You Willing To Give Up? Text: Jn. 3:16-17 Scripture Reading: I Jn. 3:16; 4:8-11

  2. Intro • We can know a lot about a person by what they love… • What do they sacrifice (give up) for what they love? Jn. 3:16-17 (“God so loved the world…He gave…”) 16. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17. "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. I Jn. 3:16 (God gave His Son to save the world) 16. We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. I Jn. 4:8-11 (“God is love”) 8. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. What Are You Willing To Give Up?

  3. Intro • Love is not a warm, fuzzy feeling, but a sacrifice for the • object of love • Relationships, business, hobbies and recreation… God so loved the world that He gave His Son for it to be saved! What do you love and what are you willing to give up for it? What Are You Willing To Give Up?

  4. The Pharisees So Loved… Mt. 23:1-7 1. Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2. saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; 3. therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. 4. "They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger. 5. "But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. 6. "They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7. and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men. The Pharisees loved the “place of honor” and praise of men! Jn. 12:42-43 (Mt. 10:33) 42. Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; 43. for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God. The Pharisees loved “the praise of men” rather than praise of God! What Are You Willing To Give Up?

But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, *said, 5. "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people?" 6. "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God." 5. And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it. 8. And Peter responded to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for such and such a price?" And she said, "Yes, that was the price." 9. Then Peter said to her, "Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well." 10.
