  1. During the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the Japanese modernized and industrialized Japan.

  2. Of course, industries required resources. Unfortunately, Japan lacked natural resources.

  3. The Japanese, like the Western Europeans, began to conquer and colonize land for resources and power.

  4. The Japanese defeated the Russians in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905.

  5. Japan gained Korea.

  6. The Japanese conquered Manchuria. Manchuria was located in northeastern China and was rich in resources.

  7. Like Western European imperialists, Japan sought colonies to gain valuable natural resources.

  8. As the years passed, the Japanese government became more and more militaristic.

  9. Between 1937 and 1938, the Japanese army attacked the city of Nanking in China. Many Chinese civilians were killed.

  10. Japanese forces massacred between 250,000 and 300,000 Chinese. This brutal attack on civilians is known as the Rape of Nanking.

  11. Japanese troops raped 20,000 Chinese women.

  12. Believing in racial superiority, the Japanese terrorized the Chinese inhabitants of Nanking.

  13. The militarist, Tojo, became Japan’s Prime Minister in 1941.

  14. Tojo ordered the surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

  15. The emperor of Japan, Hirohito, followed the policies of militarists.

  16. Japanese militarism, imperialism, and ethnocentrism paved the way to world war.
