  1. Since 1600s, Japan still had Shoguns (Tokugawa) and was isolated • 1853: Commodore Matthew Perry carried a letter from President Fillmore demanding Japan open its ports • Displayed power of modern ships • Japan opened up ports, but tried to regulate trade Rise of Japan

  2. 1867 – Shoguns and daimyos led a revolt and changed emperors • 15 yr old Mutsuhito (Meiji) put in power • Moved to Edo (from Kyoto) and it was renamed Tokyo • Meiji Restoration (1868-1912) • Massive modernization movement • Studied Western model

  3. Government • Adopted German model • All citizens equal before law • Emperor had autocratic/absolute rule with a legislature (diet) appointed by emperor • Industrialization • Modern banking system, railroads, telegraph and postal system

Military became more powerful • Expansion (conflict with China Sino-Japanese War 1894) and conflict over influence of Korea • Obtained treaty ports in China and Taiwan • Imperial Japan • 1904-1905 fought Russia (Russo-Japanese War) • Fought over Imperial desires in Korea and Manchuria • Destroyed Russia’s Pacific fleet in one battle • Gained control of Korea and part of Manchuria in Treaty of Portsmouth
