  1. 6th Grade back to school night Mrs. Charles, Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Leeper, and Mrs. Lowery

  2. Grade level expectations • As a grade level we do strive to help the students fulfill the OTTER BEs. We focus on positive rewards; however we do subscribe to the “love and logic” philosophy and help students to learn that some choices do result in a natural consequence. • Our goal is for each student to become successful, not just as 6th graders, but as productive citizens. • We do expect our 6th graders to complete their Agenda daily.

  3. Classwork/homework/late • Due to the sheer demands of rotating for all subjects, it is imperative that the students be organized. We do everything in our power to help our students achieve that target. (reminders, agendas, etc) • Any classwork not completed will be sent home to be completed for homework. • Homework is not busy work, it an essential component of student learning and we appreciate parent support in reinforcing this concept. • There is some homework that your child will consistently have on a weekly basis. (Greek/Latin Roots, Reading Log, Drops in the Bucket, and Flocabulary) Please see our website for further clarification.

  4. Classwork/homework/late • Late work – we understand that students have outside activities, however it is their responsibility to plan their time accordingly with enough time to complete their academic responsibilities. • Late work will not be accepted, except in case of excused absence. Students are always welcome to go to study hall if they know ahead of time they will be unable to complete work.

  5. Cell phones • Students may keep their phones on them as along as they do not become a distraction. If it becomes an issue, they will be asked to put in their backpacks. • While at school cell phones must be on vibrate. • We understand that cell phones are essential tool for student-parent communication, however we ask that parents respect instructional time. Students will not be allowed to text or use their phones during school hours.

  6. Dress code • We will enforce the Washoe County School District dress code. • Students who violate the dress code policy will lent a more “appropriate” piece of clothing, or may be sent to the office. • Examples: shorts that are too short, shirts that are revealing, and flip flops.

  7. Remind me • We have a texting way to communicate to all 6th grade parents. • If you’re interested… • Take out your cell phones! • Input this phone # 702-799-9068 • Text @c415. • Add your first and last name. • You will receive texts once a month for future events like Point Bonita, Bingo, Otterfest, etc.

  8. Website/internet • We have put together a joint 6th grade website. http://sses6th.weebly.com • Please consider “friending” SSES on Facebook. • Our “goal” is to update both the website and Infinite Campus weekly. • We will be showing all 6th grade students how to use Infinite Campus and we encourage parents to do the same. • Please check IC regularly to determine grades and/or missing work. Paper progress reports will not be sent out this year.

  9. Infinite campus • Infinite Campus Phone App allows you to keep up to date and will notify you about attendance and grades. • Step 1: Download the app • Step 2: Launch the campus app and enter your district ID • Select Settings, District ID: MJCFXT • Enter Portal Account to Sign in • Enter your Campus Portal Username and Password • Select Log In/Sign In • If you do not have a user name and password you must contact Mrs. Nesler in the office.

  17. General information • Students must travel on the bus, or with his/her own parent. The district guidelines do not want parents to drive other children. • Please adhere to the alcohol and smoking rules. At no time should a child see an adult smoking. Alcoholic beverages are forbidden at the YMCA and by WCSD during field trips.

  18. General information con’t • Any unusual or emergency situations need to be reported to a 6th grade teacher. • All students and chaperones must wear the Point Bonita t-shirt on Monday. • Parents and students will ride on the same bus the entire trip. Please have students use the rest rooms BEFORE loading the bus when possible. It is a traveling sani-hut and it fills up quickly and gets stinky! • NO VENDING MACHINES at rest stop for students.

  19. At the pier • Each child and chaperone will receive $5.00 spending money. Students should only spend money at the Wharf. • While at the Wharf keep students with you at all times. Do not send a student alone EVER! No Merry-Go-Round or motion rides please. No candy cigarettes. Parents that drive will not be in charge of a group. Please plan to pair up when you get to the Wharf. Exchanging cell numbers will work best. • It is important that everyone return to the buses by 2:00pm. This will mean shopping and bathroom stops will need to start by 1:30. Being on time is essential to us arriving at Point Bonita on time.

  20. Point bonita -arrival • There is a boy’s dorm and a girl’s dorm. If a mother and son, or a father and daughter are attending the trip they will need to stay in separate dorms, but you will be with your child for everything else. There must be a parent in every room for the safety of the students. Also realize that rooms vary in size. • Please help unload buses when we arrive. Do not put things on sidewalks due to fire codes. Please put student luggage on the curb. If it is raining we will place items in entry ways. • Parents will receive a master room list with the names of all students in each room. YOU may move in right away, but students and their belongings need to wait.

  21. Point bonita – general • Kids need to be on time for all meetings. Parents may be late, but please make sure your child is on time. • Please monitor cell phones. Use only at recreation times. Students should only use them to call home during free time. All cell phones need to be off while with naturalists. If a parent must take a call during that time, please excuse yourself from the group.

  22. Point bonita - general • Please realize not all groups have the same experience and/or do the exact same things. • Each person needs to bring a backpack. Please have your child carry their own belongings. • Let the naturalists lead the groups. Do not help the students with challenges. You will get to relax and enjoy the trip. If you want to skip an activity or hike, no problem, we have plenty of adults. Please let a teacher know if a group is short on chaperones or if there needs to be assistance with discipline.

  23. Point bonita - general • Kids need to be supervised at all times. At recreation time please spread yourselves out to cover all areas. Please adhere to the ratio of 8:1 if going to the batteries or for a hike. • There are no bathrooms in the dining hall so if a student needs to use the rest room please accompany him /her during meal times • Coffee and hot chocolate are for ADULTS ONLY! No soda is available at Point Bonita

  24. Point Bonita Meals • Point Bonita will only be leading the pre-meal meeting and clean up, the first day. Teachers will be organizing all the other meals. Parents will need to be hopper supervisors and stay to oversee students acting as hoppers • All students must sit with their naturalist’s group and a few parent chaperones. • Remain seated. Everyone gets a first serving before seconds are allowed. • 1 dessert per person, NO EXCEPTIONS. • Hoppers are the only ones to bus dishes and fill water pitchers; however everyone can help organize leftovers, plates, cups, and silverware. • Garbology – anything you could have eaten but did not

  25. Wednesday • Remind kids to wear their tie dye shirts for safety reasons. It makes it easy to identify students at a glance. Parents please wear tie dye if you have it. • Start to have kids clean and pack first thing in the morning. Students will need to load all their belongings on to their originally assigned bus.

  26. wednesday • Please make sure that students use the restroom and fill water bottles prior to leaving Point Bonita. • Students should not need to use the restroom until they arrive at the other side of the Golden Gate.

  27. Golden gate • We need to supervise kids closely at the Golden Gate Bridge. Parents will need to spread out among the group to keep kids moving. Please remind kids to be respectful of other people not with SSES, we do not have exclusive use of the bridge. • Students need to hug the railing and walk in pairs to allow others to pass. • Absolutely no hanging over anything, dropping anything, or running. • Watch out for bicyclists • Please help supervise and have kids use restrooms prior to getting back on the bus.

  28. Golden gate • We will take attendance and depart for home as soon as everyone is accounted for on all buses. Our goal is to leave the Golden Gate by 2:00pm • If driving, you will want to leave earlier from Point Bonita to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Driving parents usually drive over and walk across to meet us half way. • It is important that your child does not get “special privileges.” Not every child is lucky enough to have a parent attending so we need to be there for all students, and have the same expectations.
