  1. Global Burden of Disease PHE contribution to GBD project Project Lead: Adrian Davis, Head of Population Health Science, PHE Senior Data Lead: Jürgen Schmidt, CKO Senior Analyst: Andrew Hughes, KIT SE

  2. GBD – what is it? most comprehensive effort to date to measure epidemiological levels and trends around the world (187 countries to date)… • Run by Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) • Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation • Publication for UK recently - change from 1990 to 2010

  3. Outputs The results are presented in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), a time-based measure that combines years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLLs) and years lived with a disability (YLDs), metrics that were specifically developed to assess the burden of disease. One DALY can be thought of as one lost year of "healthy" life.

  4. Burden of disease attributable to 20 leading risk factors, 2010

  5. Role of PHE • Work programme 2013 – 2016 • 2013 objectives: • Update of data to GBD project – mortality, covariates • Regional break-down of outputs (recommendation from GBD) • Gain understanding of IHME models • Lancet paper(s) (regional outputs and 2012 UK update) • By 2016: • Establish an overall population health model for England, using GBD / IHME methodology.
