Enhancing Precision and Accuracy in Paper Ball Throwing

This experiment explores methods to improve precision and accuracy when throwing paper balls. By creating a paper ball of any size and utilizing a consistent throwing technique, participants will analyze their throws toward a target. The experiment provides a structured procedure, guiding participants to record their locations and outcomes meticulously. It distinguishes between precision, defined as how closely grouped the measurements are, and accuracy, which reflects how close a measurement is to the accepted value. The conclusions drawn will contribute to understanding basic principles of measurement and estimation.

  1. How’s Your Aim?Entry #5 8/28/2013

  2. Question: • What is a way to increase your precision and accuracy when throwing paper balls? • Create your own hypothesis. Hypothesis:

  3. Procedure: • Create one paper ball. Use your hypothesis to help you. You may make the paper ball any size. You may add tape if you choose. • You will get 5 throws at the target. You must stand on the sidewalk. You may throw that ball any way you choose; however, you must throw the paper ball the same way EVERY TIME!!! • Record your location for each throw in your journal.

  4. Please draw this in your journal.

  5. Analyze Data: • Precision vs. Accuracy:

  6. Precision is a description of how close measurements are together. • It can be used to describe the smallness or exactness of measurements.

  7. Accuracy is how close your measured valued is to the accepted value.

  8. Estimation is a means of making a rough measurement of something. How many jellybeans are in the pile?

  9. Conclusion: • Glue in the completed estimation homework sheet.
